Well, I gone and done it. I purchased one of Trimble's new GEOXM 2005 GPS this week and I just finished listing my old PDA/GPS on ebay. I also upgraded to a new Toshiba Satellite 100 laptop with DUO Centrino CPU and 100 gig  :o HD. I'm going to get a new power supply for my old laptop (one of the reasons for a new machine) and list it also on ebay. Laptops are pretty cheaply priced now-a-days and seem to be fairly loaded. I got the wide screen model and it's so shiny I can look at it like a mirror and see the back yard behind me. :D :D :D Anyone got a broadband connection? Sure is a pain on dialup when you have a new zippy PC.  :'( :'(

I have Wireless between my Laptop and GEOXM, but I can't figure how to access my laptop's internet connection. I've read and gone through the setup wizard and no good. Maybe I can't access the Laptop's internet connection through wireless. I know I can if I have bluetooth on the PC, Bluetooth comes on my GEOXM. It's not a big deal, but was mostly playing around with the network settings to see what can be done. Anyways, it connects to the Laptop thru USB and ActiveSync 4.1 none-the-less.  The new GEOXM sure works quick at achieving a satellite lock compared to my old unit. :)

Bout time you got a new laptop! ;D

I guess you lost me on the internet connection.
Do you have any connection on the laptop?

SwampDonkey

Yes I connect to internet thru dialup connection, but I was hoping my wireless connection from my Handheld (GEOXM) would be able to reach the internet connection on the laptop as shared access. There's every immaginable port and connector on this new laptop. Apparently the new machines don't come with a floppy drive, but you can get a USB floppy for $40 I think, but I probably won't need it. Geesh, now I even have a new wide screen portable DVD movie player. ;D

Furby, do you know what DVD RAM drive is? I never used that before, but this Mult-CDROM has everything immaginable on it for different types of CD's.  :)

I know one thing, I'll never use UDF again, all my UDF formatted CD's are coasters.  ::) :'(

DVD RAM= DVD Random Access Memory
Basicly a fancy name for a DVD burner I belive. ;)

I paid $15 for a USB floppy drive and have used it, but only a couple times.

I now understand your internet connection intentions.
Sounds like you need to set the laptop up as a host or server and then allow the Handheld to connect.
Don't know the actually process, but someone here does. ;)
Basicly what you do when you set up a router.
Remember what Jeff went through when he installed his router?

Glad you guys understand what this is all about cuz I sure don't ???

I've got the connection between the two devices through wireless and LAN and even USB (laptop <> GEOXM), but the GEOXM can't seem to reach the internet connection on the laptop to share it. I know I can use the GEOXM to access webpages. Don't they have wireless internet access at hotels and some filling stations?

Yeah getting back to the UDF formatted CD's. When I insert the old ones into the DVD burner it attempts to load autoplay and everything goes into lock-up mode.  ::) I can't even reformat them unless I go in and turn off outoplay in windows and then reformat as RWCD's.  :(  Apparently, there is a different flavor of UDF format installed (Sonic I think) and it's in conflict.  >:(

sawguy, feel your pain.  ;D

Oh, a Trimble GEOXM is a handheld PC with GPS receiver for making land measurements and navigating. ;D

There is wireless internet all over the place these days!
Just drive around and check for an open connection.
Beenthere made a post listing places he has found a wireless connection and they match the places I found.
Only been busted once for tapping in, and all they were gonna do is ask me to leave, but I passed them on my way out. ;D
You have the connection between the handheld and the laptop, but the laptop has to be setup to allow the handheld access to the internet.
I don't know enough about it to walk you through it.
Do you have a firewall running?
It may be blocking the internet connection.

joelmar10

I know that to share your laptop's internet connection you change it under network connections, advanced tab, select to share the internet connection.

For your laptop to share the geoxm network connection I'm guessing that windows ce on the handheld would have a similar setup.  Only a guess, since I've never used a handheld of any kind.  It should work peer to peer if you have them talking to one another already.
I used to think I could fix DanG near anything...now I know I can...or I think I can...or maybe I can?

Yes, everything should work, even firewalled. You just use a password between the two machines to get on the network. I used the wizard to set up internet sharing, but I guess I'm not getting it.

Furby, wireless is slowly coming about here and just in towns, when your out in potato fields and tree plantations.....well ya might as well sing to frogs. ;D

I'm confused.  Are you wanting to share the dialup connection of your laptop with the geoxm?

Thanks, that's one of the sites I visited yesterday. It sure does advertise heavily.  I'm going to bookmark it and try it next weekend. I haven't been feeling too good today, like someone took a bat to me or something. Maybe, that's what I need.  ::)

Well I sold my old PDA/GPS and shipped it out in Wednesday. I received my new power supply for my old Toshiba Laptop and have just listed it on Ebay (my second listing). I wiped the hard drive and did a clean install of Windows XP. It actually boots to the desktop in under 30 seconds without all the bloatware installed. ;D  8)
