I have read the above term, but I do not know what it means.  Please explain.  Thanks

Generally refers to the splitting of a tree before finishing the back-cut when falling. Happens sometimes when the tree is leaning. The tree falls with the split portion sticking out, and sometimes catching the faller under the chin. Something to avoid by proper cutting procedures.

A search on barberchair on this forum will bring up a number of threads, but one in particular shows a good picture.

You can look at the pictures connected with this link about Barberchair..

Photos must be in the Forestry Forum Gallery.

The fellow said he figured the butt when up 60 feet in the air when it hinged and then broke off, fell down and hit the faller...

A bad day in the woods!!!

Woodhog,
Wow that is some barberchair :o
Ain't seen one like that.  Then again I work alone and work real hard at not getting into a situation where I can get hurt or killed ;)

In addition to leaner's, trees with frost cracks or rot can have unpredictable behavior.  Special attention needs to be paid when felling.

Yes Im in there alone all the time also.. if something like that happened to me I would have no one else to blame it on :D

Its a scary one for sure..I find I usually have a few close calls every week with something, when I review them in my mind when trying not to fall asleep when the load is coming out I usually find it is my fault in some way...

I try to look up/down/ around, not fall down, not roll over, not bump into dead trees and knock off the top, not cut myself with the saw, not to over work and strain myself, not to spill gas on a hot saw, not to open the gas can without venting on a hot day, not to forget to put the gas cap back on the saw and then run the gas all down over my pantlegs, not to puncture myself with sharp objects, not to forget to clean my glasses when they fill up with sweat and I cant see, not get fly in my eyes, not to damage any of the gear which will then put me out of business due to the fact that the log price is so low that you can afford any major repairs...
dont go looking for lines on a bitter cold day after sweating and forget your compass...

There are probably a few hundred more items as above in the battle to stay alive in the woods.

Gee now I feel better after that little rant....

I wrap my trunks with chains now, it has saved me a few times. I posted the pictures of one tree a few months ago.
