Yesterday was in the 60s and partly cloudy.  Admittedly, I took a leave from the shop to go and work on some short log hardwoods a craft producer brought me the other day.

What's left of my stack of washed short (48"-68") logs.

One of the longest of the shorts.

Thats a nice setup you have.I plan on building my sawmill house next summer, got some good ideas from your pics. THANKS

Larry

They look long to me. ;D  Course I have been accused (unjustly) of stealing sticks out of my neighbors firewood pile to mill. :D

I like the pictures of your mill shed from the inside...looks quite comfy. 8) 8)

Every time that I see pics of your shed I want one just like it!

Nothing wrong with short logs, especialy if you have a use for them. 10'6 is the shortest log the big mill around here takes, so I can usually get anything shorter for free. Flooring can be run from shorts, doors and door casing, and jambs too. I would agree, those logs look long after seeing what larry is sawing. :D

tcsmpsi

Yep.  That's a short one alright, Larry.  Purdy, though.   ;)

Today was another day like yesterday...yes...I did, I just had to leave the shop and go out and work on those a bit more.  ;D  Got to have them done before the 28th, and I've got two class weekends between now and then.  I'm in pretty good shape right now, as I've only got three of those left to do.

Just put a new blade on and made a couple cuts in one of those before I had to come back to the shop.   Now that I have the set up, I can finish it when I get in tonight.  But then, the children are going to expect me to feed them...and they're not too keen on eating sawdust.  I may just stop and buy something already dead and cooked. :D

I've got a couple cedar butts about the length of that log of yours, Larry.  But, one of them has 'sprouts'.  Still studying how I'm going to trim to get it to mill.

Yeah guys, the mill set up helps out a bunch.

Larry

I'm a world class sprout cutter...cut em from 1 1/4" to 2" thick straight off the main log.  Sell em for either clocks, carving bases, or fish boards if big nuff.

tcsmpsi

Ahhh yes, then you understand my dilemma.   :D

One of the sprouts is big enough that it might work well with the main log, if I think of a unique use for such a critter.

Left a couple things I needed at the mill last nite.  So, while I went out to retrieve those, took a couple more pics of current status of this run of short logs.

Finally, the last one of this run awaiting its turn at the saw.   ;D

It's about time, too.  I'm about to have to move stacks.   :D

If I do, what odds would you be giving of my inclination to return?   ;)

What kind of wood is that sprout you'll be taking the 20 footers from?

Up til this run of shorts, I had been cutting predominantly SYP, with a chunk of oak every now and then.  Pretty slow sawing in that knotted old stuff, and I'm not real thrilled with my cuts.  Most of it will plane out with a pass on each side, but some will probably take a couple passes, and 4 or 5 of them may just be 'ornamental'.   :D

I found that running a new blade didn't help much with overall speed, because I would have to hold it back.

From what we had discussed, overall I believe the guy will be pretty pleased with what he is getting.

Deadheader,

That probably is not a midget standing on that log is it?

If that is the rare white-backed bark bettle (that is funny!!), then that must just be a twig.
