Hello All,

Many timber frame barns in central PA have tie beams that extend beyond the outside wall of the structure. They are all beveled on the top and bottom and pinned into the fork of the post.

I have been told that these are called "bulls necks".  A four bent barn will have four of these on each side under the eave.  I can produce a picture if necessary, but thought I would ask and get some opinions.

thanks

Andy

Please show us a picture.
I never heard that term before.
It sounds like an anchor beam to me......
But I'd like to see it to be sure...
