What type of wood native to new england ,would be good to replace timbers on an older wooden mill??Would heartwood white oak cut oversize then remilled when dry be ok thanks Frank C.

Unless you are in southern New England The white oak might be hard to come by. I personally don't think you need anything that heavy, but I am no expert. If it were me I would use ash. Fir or Spruce would probably work fine too.

oak would be nice, but I agree that nicer white oak is hard to come by around me.  I would think hemlock would be the choice for me, tough and avaliable, with not much of a market.

Good choices above  :)  I would prefer white oak.  How much do you need and how long??

BTW - I went with Eastern Hemlock - plenty of that in New Hampshire...
