it has a few minor checks in the bottom but i couldnt find it in me to just toss out that color, drying entire end grain log sections is a challenge,but..i'm learning

SwampDonkey

Looks nice, and it has kept it's color to.  :)

That's nice Tom! Even if it's a bit extravagant for a cell phone holder.  ;D

That is really beautiful. The box elder that TT sells is awesome. I can't wait to get the new shop done so we can get to all our projects that are stacking up.

Today I finished the wiring while Norm insulated. In two weeks we will have sheetrock.  8)

Pepto-Bismo usually helps me when I get that.
I can change my profile okay. No errors. If you can,t remove all the extra info in other fields and try.

Patty I'm gonna start hanging out with you . . . I won't feel so bad about all my unfinished projects. :D

Jeff no one can accuse you of being defecient in the wit and sharp humor department. That was funny. Had you been born British I am certain you'd have been in MPFC.

What kind of lathe are you turning that size on and at what speed?   My old cast iron monster won't  spin outboard and I'm considering investing.......

Nice looking work.........

lud,i turned the donut on a teknatool lathe with an outboard attatchment..and thanks..love to colors in the "weed" tree

Lud

I'll check them out.  Was that a cookie of box elder to get the stripe?  Dried or green?

It does seem that sawmills and lathes go together.

lud..it started out as a20x27"log,i just hacked off a chunk ,anchor sealed it and pre-turned it about a week later and then anchor sealed it again,it sat for a year before i got back into it..as far as tho color goes,it had lots of it radially which i think is fairly common around my neck of the woods..it seems like the bigger they get the more colorful they are, trick is gettin to them before they get punky ;D

SwampDonkey

Yea, my grandfather cut one down he thought was hollow, but it was still good and had that red heartwood. Was afraid it might fall on the house in a wind. It was quite big, relatively speaking.

So I got the Teknatool DVR-XP for my birthday present.  in June.
Have turned more than a dozen items since.
Trying the brown bag drying  method.  Microwave seemed to warp a small one too much.
Read about boiling them yesterday.  Anyone tried that?
Haven't tried a donut yet but did a 20" platter the last few days.

Boiling works well with some woods, destroys others. Right now I been usin' Pentacryl. That works OK.

I am working on a small vacuum kiln which is the real answer. As soon as the house project is done the kiln is on the top of the list.  ;D  ;D  ;D
Why not just 1 pain free day?

Steve,

I wish you would start a how-to thread on that vaccum kiln. Never mind it may likely prove to be an ongoing  trial and error discovery at best, or an outright fiasco at worse. In fact, all the better.

It will likely work quite well even and then we'd all be able to consider it. Man I need one in the worst way, and I mean bad. Den did get me out of a jamb a couple months ago and dried something for me that turned out perfect, but Den is a pro and has a gazillion dollar setup..

My demand from niche markets - especially the luthier market is about take all the stock I can provide I am going to have to quit selling to turners at some point. My inability to dry this stuff expediently as it comes off the stump is a big hinderance to me. This species does not store well off the stump, and the turners gobble it up wet so that the niche markets cannot get any dry because I cannot keep it. Some cannot  use it unless it's dry.

I hope you will seriously consider doing a thread on it, and not wait until you are done and have worked all the bugs out. A couple of us could be buidling and tinkering right along side and maybe get it tweaked alot sooner that way. C'mon now, no excuses. Get that house done, and the notepad & camera dusted off! :)
