Prediction:

I predict Marcel is going to pretend he forgot about this fun little thread - until (if) the wingless birds win one. ;D

MArcel try and remember this simple precept of bird fighting. When one species of bird does battle with another species of bird, the bird that can fly the best usually wins. The Redwings have, well, "wings". They are red.

The panguns have nice little tuxedo's (perfect to attend funerals etc. like for instance the death of an Eastern Conference Champion after a 4 game sweep) but it is well established Panguns can't fly.

So, that's why you see those guys in red dashing around the rink like they are flying at Mach II and those other ones, the ones with no wings, well they are running as fast as they can but flying is a much more efficient form of travel. Results? 4 pucks in the nest. :D

Hey, where is Roxie ??? ;D

I do not follow hockey enough now to know how these teams play, but the Flyers of old had an answer to that.  smiley_smash

TT, you are probably not old enough to remember Ed Van Impe and the check that was felt all the way to the Soviet Union.  ;D

No I don't remember that one. Should I google it or can ya learn me ???

I did watch the Miracle on Ice. I mean the original one too, and that is what got me interested in hockey to begin with. I saw it "live" actually I believe it was a recodring that we first saw here in the states in 1980 but I remember it well.

The year after the Flyers won the Stanley Cup, the Soviet hockey team came to the US for a tour and played a number of the best NHL teams in exhibitions and beat them all as that was an all star team that could really skate. Their last exhibition game was against the defending champs, the Flyers in the old Spectrum on Broad Street in Philly.

The Flyers coach, Fred Shero, had a simple game plan. The Flyers defensemen were told that if anyone tried to skate across their blue line with the puck, to knock them down. It did not take long in the first period for Ed Van Impe, a Flyers defenseman to flatten one of those high flying Soviet forwards. And you can probably imagine the roar that went up in the whole country.

So the Soviets left the ice and went back to their dressing rooms and their coach refused to play any more with those "ruffians." The general manager of the Flyers went into the Soviets dressing room and convinced them to come back on the ice and finish the game. Afterwards, when asked how he got them to come back and play, the GM said he used an old capitalistic trick. He told them if they did not play, they would not get paid.  ;D

Needless to say the Flyers won easily after that incident as the Soviets were skating very tentatively after that. And Ed Van Impe became a very well known hero for that check which he said was really not all that rough.  ;D

And I got to hear this story directly from Ed who I met some years later. But he was still a hero.   8)

Cool story! i guess that's how they got the moniker "Broad Street Bullies"? What year was this?

I think it was the mid 1970's. Back in those days, the "Broad Street Bullies" had a player whose last name was Schultz and was called "The Hammer" because he only knew how to skate forward and when he wanted to stop he just ran into someone.  :D

The next best thing to the Flyers winning is the Penguins winning though.   8)  I'm still supporting the Pennsylvania team!

I have a beef with the Versus coverage.  Doesn't seem to fail, anything that happens, Wings score, wings win, they always pan to Sidney Crosby's face...

Anybody remember the Red Wings Avalanche Feuds from the 90's after the Coward Claude  the "turtle" Lemieux broke Chris Drapers face on the Wings bench boards with a blindside hit? Then was da days. Never missed a minute of Wings Avs games. :)

You don't get to see the goailes go at it very often.

My wife ask me a few years ago when we were watching the Stars getting hammered (on the scoreboard) by the Sharks I think it was . . . . "Why do they fight in hockey and it is okay?"

I just said  "It's not 'okay' it's a 5 minute major penalty for the but it's part of the game honey. Just like there is the shooting the puck and skating on the ice, there is fighting in hockey. " :D

I didn't know what else to say?

Compared to a shot in the mouth with a puck, a fist is rather minor. :D

I love these tough Football guys. A deceny hit, and they are out for 2-3 games ???

One night I watched a Hockey player take a puck in the mouth, took 55 stitches, and returned to the game, a few teeth less. Where's my 1-tooth brush ???  Now, THAT's TOUGH.  8) 8)
