How/when do you guys do a swing dutchman when felling a tree?  Are there other methods that are safer that work just as well?

I don't use it.

Doing a search, turned up this site
http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/logging/manual/felling/cuts/special_techniques/unacceptablepractices.html

that claims the swing dutchman is an unacceptable practice, and shows why.
Makes some sense.

i heard at one point that it was actually outlawed also in BC because its very dangerous to use. its really easy for someone who doesnt know how to use it to get killed.

Usually by mistake. ::) ;) Lot's of risk using an intentional dutchman (or an unintentionalone). I've tipped my "level" cut out of level for a mild swing before, but never an intentional dutchman.

I can't think of too many times I would want to use a felling method that has a failure potential like the dutchman.

I have placed my felling notch at an angle to swing a tree on occasion which works okay.  This way you still have a decent hindge and control.

Where you get into trouble using a dutchmen is stopping or stalling the back cut.
The hinge breaks early on the dutchman and if you don't keep up with the breaking wood then there is potential for a barber chair.

You are better off using an adjusted gun and/or a tapered hinge.

Ive been told My Dad was pretty Dang good at them In His prime as a faller they used to get alot of blocks of timber around buildings that they did  some ppls rings used to pucker up  :o watching him drop them near there homes tho  ;) :D :D Like Hes said you need to practise on them somwhere where it dosnt matter if You muck it up  :o a fair few times before you use them anywhere near a building .

Ive never used or intend to ever try a Duchman Myself  ;) ;D ;D Im a good faller but not that good  ;) :D :D I like My clearfell but I get stuck on thinning or selective logging 90% of the time  :( :'(    ;) :D :D.
