Wow that's amazing $50/hr is low.  I guess that's an eye opener for me.  Trust me, I know about all the expenses.

When I first started this business I said "it won't cost that much, if it doesn't work out I'm not out of anything".... HA!!!!!  It's like going to college.  The more money, time, and headaches you invest the harder it is to just quit.  There's no turning back now.

On a side note,  I forgot to ask about (forest walk throughs-pricing).
I've got a guy that wants me to come look at his timber.  I think it's my sixth sense telling me that he just wants free advice.... He just said to meet him and he'd take me over to look at the timber.  If I tell this guy $50/hr he's going to laugh.
Sooooo, do you guys charge for initail consultation and walk through???  I see on the internet that a lot of guys offer this for free.  Working for free doesn't sound like anyway to operate a business!  Yeah offering it for free might lead to more or bigger jobs with that person in the future but what if it doesn't?

I just charge mileage on an initial consultation...there is no reason not to do so...I had been offering free initial consultation, but with gas prices skyrocketing, I had to change that at the time...they are just as likely/unlikely to hire you in my experience anyway. I've had people call me that say they had a consultant tell them that they would not visit the property for less than $2000...now THAT floored me...absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. Basically, charge whatever is fair to you...as soon as I get more time, I'll post more for you, Good Feller.

I figure half a day is shot on any visit so charge half a day in time and mileage because that's what's invested. Your furnace repair man charges $75 bucks just to show up, so why be afraid to get your worth. Locally, if they just want advice they can call the Marketing Board, since their wood sales will be paying the wages (2.2% of gross).
