Just got a new to me 034. Dayum clean saw, runs killer, bar and chain are garbage...
Was wondering if I convert it to 3/8 will this handle a 24" skip chain?

No saw would be low on power with 3/8 pitch & would cause clutch damage

A newer and stronger 036 is somewhat underpowered with a 24" bar. The final choice depends on what other saws you have. If you have any other saw that is bigger, then the 034 would be much happier with a 20". If you have no other large saws and this will be your 'big dog' then it will have to be good enough with a 24" until you can buy a bigger saw.

Rocky-J - Isn't the 034 the same as the 036 engine wise?

According to the info posted on CSCC, the 034AVEQ was introduced in 1984 and the displacement was 3.45 c.i.

In 1993 Stihl had the 034AVSEQ which is listed as 3.75 c.i. The listing for the 036AVSEQ lists the introduction year as 1993 and the identical 3.75 c.i. displacement. I'm inclined to believe that somewhere in that information is an error, although I'm not sure where.
The 036 is essentially an 034 with a larger bore and piston.

Depends on which 034 .Some were 56 cc some were 61.5 cc .By the way an 038 AV is 61 cc also .A third of a cubic inch wouldn't be earth shattering .

It's not that it won't take the extra 4 inchs of bar it's more due to the fact it handles a 20 inch much better .Just how much good would 4 more inchs do any way other than cause one not to flex so much around the mid section while bucking firewood for example .

Oh ,by the way these saws all came from the factory with 3/8" chain ,not .325 .

The original 034 was 56cc, the 034Super was 61.5cc like the 036 - but with some cheaper parts in the design.

Max power difference was about .4hp, according to specs.

Ok, my mistake on the 3/8... Just bought new 20" chain today, still interested in the 24" because I'm 6'4" and that extra 4" would be nice on the back.... Only cuttin firewood, max size being maybe 12" in diameter, seems that it would handle it ok not being in big wood.

If you do run the 24" b&c be sure to turn up the oil pump. If you only cut small wood it will be ok because you do not need that much power to cut small dia wood.  Not all 034 saw came with 3/8 in some areas they were sold with both 325 & 3/8

I have two 034's  one mounted with .325 the other with 3/8" , both from the time they left the dealer . I run both with 18" bars . They would run a skip tooth 24 inche bar and chain as long as you use the saw as a 034 and not an 044 ... Up the oil pump some and go for it .

How do I up the oil oil pump on my 034 to supply a 24" B&C?

There should be a small screw in the bottom of the saw.  Clockwise gets ya more oil... :)
