my 353 detroit is some hard to turn over when it cold. -15C.  and when it starts it not showing any oil presure for about 5- 10 seconds. once its warm up it reads 50psi. at idle what is the best oil to use in a cold climate.   ??? ??? not looking for a year round oil just a winter grade.

Best oil I have found for winter in diesels is some of the new synthetic oils. You can get some in a 5W-40  and perhaps a 5W-30. They really do make a difference in cold starting.

Disadvantages are expensive and if you have any engine oil leaks now, they will be worse with synthetics.

I used a Cenex Maxtron I think was the name of it.

Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

You say you have a small leak, are you sure it's not the air box drain? if so thats normal.

I have a 353 in my knuckleboom and it seems to start pretty good in the cold. I had a 453 in my skidder and it was always a pain in the cold. I never have used the synthetic oil before i need to try it out. I have a loader at the mill with a detroit motor in it and it was hard to get started even in the summer. It runs a barko 80. The truck stays in one place so the other day i took the hydraulic pump off it and am putting a electric motor on it. We have all the frame work done on it so tomarrow i am going to hook it up. I will like flipping a switch and being able to go to work. I have never seen a detroit that never has leaks I think they are the worse i have rebuilt them with new seals everywere and still they leak.
