Here is a good one!

Any opinion on a husqvarna 3120?E

-Is it reliable, durable, holds up in extreme conditions?

And what is the Jungle version? (just a ported muffler?)

Please give any Opinion! BE BRUTAL!!!!

Too big for anything but milling IMO. I don't even pull out my 395 for anything under 36" or so. In my experience, most people who buy the 3120 (or Stihl 880) just want 'the biggest' even though they usually aren't that adept at getting the most out of their smaller saws. I know 4 guys that own Stihl 880's and three of them can't even file their own chain. Of course it's a different story if you're milling with it.

Great saw if you are built like a gorilla and need to cut 6 ft dia trees every day.

Otherwise, well you will probably end up walking like a gorilla, with your knuckles dragging on the gound by the end of the day  :D

Those things weigh close to a ton, well it would feel like it after a days sawing anyway.

Makes a really good piped alky racesaw.  :o
Makes a even better racesaw when crank is stroked.  ;)
Makes a  super duper racesaw when crank is stroked and cylinder is bored.  8)

So buy one use it, wear it out and when you are tired of it holler.  :)

Most very large saws get very little run time on them . I've got five of 100 cc's and over and I doubt they get a combined time of two hours per year and part of that is at GTG's .

Fact is in my shed resides an 084 Stihl which belongs to a trimmer that had no run time on it at all for two years prior to me tuning it up so I had something that stood a half way chance running over the blocks for time .

On the subject ,a 3120 makes a dandy race saw but they ain't cheap .

3120 has a bore and stroke of 60 x 42 mm.  Dont expect it to rev out like a 372.  Good stump saw or special purpose unit like for milling.  25 pounds without the bar and chain.

Best wishes,
Bob

I loved Mine i had it for about 15 years rebuilt the piston and pot once  ;) ;D 8) 8) 8) dad got it originaly for the Csm which he bult for me at 13yo but i used it on avv about 2/300 hrs + per year Falling oversize trees and doing firewood out of large rough trees aswell That saw did a Power of work but likes being said Theres no point getting one if your going to underutilse it and use it once in a blue moon  ;)

They ae a quick saw on bucking firewood  ;D  my best day was about 8 cords docked into 1' lengths and loaded on the truck by hand with the truck driver helping out of logs that where already on the ground on the landing  ;) but on my own i use to cut about 3to4 cords w/o much drama

I use to runn a 24" and 36" bars for Falling  firewood and bucking logs and a 48" on the csm with a full skipp chain

Mine just letgo about 6 months ago and i gave it to a freind whos rebuilt it again and ill be getting myself another one in the future but at $3400 au  :o  ill stick with using the 2095 for the time being  ;) ;D 8)

Im pretty lucky that i can pick the saw i want to suit the job at hand  ;) ;D 8)
if your looking for an allround saw for biggish stuff  the 385 and 395 xps will do the trick trick  ;)

Hi , i run a 3120 ,mainly for dropping hazardous trees, where one cut is the only option, i also run it on a mill, it is heavy but a beast , its great for loging big butts. Im runing a 36, and a 42 inch bar,

Cut4fun

I know a buddy that has bought 2 used 3120's now for $150 a piece PHO. I keep looking but cant find them any cheaper then $500-$600.

But I am happy with 4 084 and 2 166 for now  ;).

Al_Smith

That same old bud I imagine was the same guy that was amazed when I found that 2100 for 90 bucks . 8) Right place, right time .

I wouldn't  mind finding the usable bones of a 3120 myself .You never know old Al might just dabble into a hotsaw some day . ;)

I originally bought mine with the idea of milling, but, ending up selling it because I hardly could find trees big enough to cut with it.

I did a test with my 3120 running .058 (might have been .050) full comp chain on a 36" bar vs. 365 running a 28" bar running .050 skip cutting a 26-28" red oak. You would think the 3120 would blow the 365 away in terms of cutting speed, it did not. Especially since the 3120 is a pain to reposition while bucking a log.

Making notches to fell a tree can be a bit of a hassle because of the weight, you really have to dig the dogs in. EVen bucking you will find yourself digging the dogs in.

If I bought a 3120 again and was going to use a "small" 36" bar,  I would probably run a larger/wider chain.

Al_Smith

That's unusual because normally a large displacement saw really shines in larger wood .

From my own experiance though it seems for anything less than about 30 inchs the smaller displacement saws hold their own pretty good as compaired to the big boys .

Once again pointing out why large saws seem to  last forever ,simpley because they don't see that much usage .

rebocardo

> That's unusual

Yes, I expected it to leave the 365 in the (saw) dust. I am sure it would have if I ran full comp on the 365 or used both saws to cut slabs or rip across the grain.

The other thing is with the 3120 you can't easily start the saw over the top of the log on the other side with the bar and angle it down as you kneel. The saw is too large, you have to position below the top of the log and angle it up to start. Hard to describe it, but, you spend a bit more time in positioning the saw then cutting when bucking logs.

> because they don't see that much usage

I agree, I have know people at several tree companies and they usually do not even take their biggest saws with them on jobs.

bandmiller2

Al's right on the big saws the only ones that get worn out belong to millers.I've had a couple of big uns given to me because they were seldom used by the tree co.and carbs got gummed up.Kits in the carb run like a top now I seldom use them, but when you need them dandy to own.Frank C.

Big saws like the 3120 and the 880 are just plain overkill for almost all aplications except for milling and racing.  Even out here in the land of the big trees... not many loggin' companies or tree guys have the super large saws.  A 390/395XP or a 066/660 will get the job done.

um,lessee.stock 283,or hopped up????  ;D ;D on topic, the 090 i have--will be used for milling only, unless someone calls with a monster.

I hate to take mine out of the shed.  ;D It's just to big & heavy.  ::)The only thing I ever use it for is cutting cookies or slabs for table tops. Put the big bar on it & it's taller than I am. But I admit it a great saw & cuts like a hungry badger.  digin_2....cheyenne

My 3120 was purchased with work in mind, and thats all its done, i have a 372, a  395, but the 3120 wil outcut , and beat them speedwise easily! I agree it is heavy but if loging it makes no diference!

STIHLFULLSKIP

i always wanted a big saw like that,(3120,ms880),not sure what i would do with it? i have an ms660 now that is more of a conversation piece, than a well used tool.i bet that saw has not seem more than 10 tanks in 10 years,it is still pretty much new.

HEY GUYS!
Ended up finding a deal on 2 Stihl 090's, the price was just too good........
I know! WHY!
because I wanted one for milling, and the other one I am completely rebuilding.
I appreciated all the comments!!!
