Warbird , Pop the dist. cap turn the motor by hand in the running direction then while watching the rotor turn the motor backwards .  If the rotor does not turn right awayyour timing chain is bad . It may have jumped a tooth or two. That makes it hard to time proper  and causes funny noises out the tail pipe.

I'm thinking that if the tranny failed that violently, it could have transmitted enough shock to the engine to cause some damage.  The easiest and cheapest thing I can think of would be the timing chain slippage.  Have you put a timing light on it yet?

Thanks Don.  Turns out the truck had/has multiple issues.  I checked the timing while the engine was being cranked and it looks dead on.  We then hooked up a timing light to every spark plug wire and found that 3 out of the 6 were not sparking.  Pulled the plugs and found those three were very carbon'd up and wet from gas.  New plugs all around and verified they are sparking with the timing light.

We also disconnected the fuel line from the tanks and ran a fuel line down to a can of gas.  After a lot of pumping the pedal while cranking it over, it'll start, we keep it floored, it'll rev real high, then die.  We now suspect it isn't getting enough fuel.  Going to try an electric pump just to test and see if it is the fuel pump.  Won't get to that until next week, tho.

Sure would like to get this one figured out so I can get rid of the thing.  I have ~$1,500 into it and am about ready to take a loss just to get it out of my hair.

it could also be a damaged line broke loose some junk when bent/moved  during trans removal/scattering that went to the pump & jammed it up.   look for lines kinked damaged.   not real familiar with chevies though, as every one I ever had left me walking...

If you gave it a gas IV and it still did not run proper ,rebuild the carb , real good .  it has pluged passages or broken parts.I used a windshield washer resivour to feed my 262 chevy when the fuel pump broke off. A quart of gas does not get you very far down the road but it beat walking.

A rodchester is a pretty decent factory carb  but some are bad evn after a factory rebuild they don't spec them and it could have passaes stopped up or a spring ball assbly stuck I might take it apart and just check for trash in the bowl  etc also tie the choke wide open when youyr cranking it may be loading and not getting the chance to idle wish I were closer I've been building cheys for 30 yrs or better for our racecars  Good Luck with it

What # plugs were they?  All on one side?

Warbird

It's got a new refurbished carb that I bought and put on it.  rebo, it was cylinders 2, 4, and 6 (middle one on drivers side, front and back on passenger side).

I won't get to work on mine anymore until next week.  Right after we'd been trying for a while, I pulled the oil dipstick and smelled it.  I could smell gasoline on it.  That leads me to believe the diaphragm in the fuel pump is busted, squirting gas up into the block.  I'll know for sure next week when we do a quick and dirty test with a hand held pump.

Don_Papenburg

We all wish it was true but just because you bought a newly refurbished carb don't make it so.  some rebuilders are just cleaners  some do a good job the trick is to guess which one is the right one. :(

I hear you, Don.  I bought from an eBay store who has been around for a long time and has a very good rating.  We'll see where it lands.  I'll post more next week, once we've worked on it some more.

I appreciate all the pointers and opinions.  Thanks guys.  ely, thanks for letting me sort of hijack your thread.  :)
