mixed hd ties are bring 17.50 fob 50 miles away

I called 1 guy and he told me $250 M,thats scaled, cut to 9' and devilered, with 10 days to pay him.

To much,right? :P ???

Lets see,the guys cutting skiding and devering to the mill get $130m,

That sounds pretty high for mixed hardwood, unless it was heavy to cherry and hard maple.  Then I might be able to see it.

I don't think oak tie logs are over $200, Doyle scale.

You might be able to make money at that rate, but you better have your costs nailed down before you commit, and know your yields.

Thats what I thought

So faw thats just about what they all want for there logs tho,and thats with out oak in it. ::)

Right now around here Blocking is going for 200, tie logs are 220 and the lowest grade is about 250.

The last time I tried buying tie logs ( couple of years ago) the loggers really didn't want to mess with them, they would rather cut them down to blocking then seperate them out.

If I had a tie place within 50 mi of me I might work on it a little harder.
Got my WM lt40g24, Setworks and debarker in oct. '97, been sawing part time ever since, Moving logs with a bobcat.

I was wondering about the blocking ,you mean the 4''x6''x2' blockings?

I can't find the buyers for them.

I know there out there but I don't know who they are or were they are at..

Pallet logs around here are refered to as blocking logs. so to buy blocking logs to cut pallet mat is costing .20 cents a board foot, doyle scale.
 ;)

At one time we were cutting 4 x 6 x 48 cants, the buyer was sending them down to texas, I think they used them welding up a pipeline?

Hope I haven't confused you too much.

In may area, blocking goes to the pallet plants.  We sell 3 1/2 x 6 with occasional calls for 4 x 6 and 5 1/2 x 6.  We just seperate them by length - 8,10,12,14,16.  I think the price is about $340 delivered.

Pallet boards are cut to either 1 x 4 or 1 x 6 and seperated by length.

You might find it profitable to take the lower grade logs and get what ties you can.  You'll still pull some grade, and then have some pallet.

You can make money by cutting 10' back to cross ties and have a nice chunk of firewood.

To find a list of pallet plants in your area, try contacting your state forestry office.  They should have a list.  They also have a list of loggers.

Log supplies are pretty tight in most areas in the East.  One large mill has been down 3 times this year due to lack of logs.

I think I'll gave it a try and see what happens

The way I got it figured it looks like a close margin tho. :P
