I have a traditional wood working bench, an antique one actually.  I need to be able to move it around the shop.  I was going make some caster fixtures that I could clamp to the legs of the bench, but then I heard about a table that Norm Abrams build in episode 0207 that had casters that were rigged up on a hinged board somehow and there was a small rope involved and some block of wood to hold the casters in place and the table off the ground.  Does anyone have any info on this design?  I'd like to understand it so that I can possibly adapt it to my table.  I would be nice to have the table sit on it's own feet when in use, and then be able to quickly lift it up to engage casters.
Thanks, Brad
PS, Yes I could order the DVD and plans, but I'm frugal, like a good new yankee!
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

Brad, My Father and I are currently building a traditional workbench with 3" white oak butcher block top. I've also been looking for ways to move it around the shop and came up with a few ideas on the web. A pic. of Norms is at http://newyankee.com/getproduct.php?0207  . From what I understand the casters are bolted to a hinged board that drops down by gravity when you pick up on the end of the bench. Two small boards bolted to each leg swivels into place to lock them in. The string is used as a release and "unlocks" the two small swivel boards. Alot clearer if you see the pic.
http://lumberjocks.com/projects/12527 has a what I think is an even cleaner setup. Same concept of a couple casters that swivel down with gravity when you pick up on the table. This thread also references several other plans. Hope it helps and post pics if you get something together. I'll do the same. Thanks

Thanks.  Those pics helped me to understand.  Thought I'd post them for others.  Now to see if I can figure out how to do it without screwing into my bench legs...maybe clamp of some kind.

Brad,

I have a portable mitersaw stand that has wheels mounted so that when all 4 legs are on the ground the wheels are maybe 1/8" off the floor. When you lift the other end the wheels touch the floor and the legs don't. I only have to lift it a few inches and go!!
