I am amazed with my 48" blade been cutting logs that have to be finished with Power Saw. I can only get thru 18" of wood but the 40 hp Ford walks right thru em a 1"X18" board spoils you bad after sawing logs that barely made a 4X4. Guess Duane set the Bellsaw up right

Shotgun barrel your logs and you won't have to get out the chainsaw.  Make a cut where your next cut will lose your saw.  Let the log roll back 30-45°.  Do the same thing again and keep on doing it until you can pass all the way through your cant.

It takes a little more log handling, but its made up in the time you don't spend using the chainsaw.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Which way do you get more boards? By shotgunning the log or by splitting it with the chainsaw?

I've done both and I think it's six of one... Now, I only do the chain saw if I absolutely have to- back is getting too worn down for that nowadays. That's the glory of hydraulics: let the engine do the work and save yourself for the pulling, stickering and stacking.  When THAT get's automated, I'll get me one of those....

When I have a large log I handle it like I am peeling a carrot with one of those pealers make a slab cut turn and anouther pretty soon you can clear the log.All you really loose is the bark.Of course redwoods are kinda scarce back east.Frank C.
