I had a customer once that wanted "saw marks" left on the timbers?   smiley_headscratch   Then I realized that he meant out of adjustment "circle saw marks".   smiley_idea   Hard to make with a band mill.   :)

That must of been a prize winning madrone log, for sure. That will be an exposed ceiling beam of some sort?  He best wait till it dries with madrone though, or it might flip the lid off his house. :D

I know of one sawyer who got heck for sawing wood that "looked too nice" -- on his bandmill. So to keep the customer happy, he scrounged a 1/4" thick metal disk about 12" in diameter, drilled and tapped a couple of holes on the perimeter, and screwed in a pair of short bolts with pointed ends so they would score the wood. Put the whole contraption in a variable speed drill and ran it along the surface of the timber. The vibration just about wrecked him, but the customer was happy.

I show people what they'll get from me and if they don't like it, I'll send them to a nearby circle mill. Some of them come back and ask me how square my timbers are  ;D.

I seem to remember that there was a piece on removing set on a few band teeth to create patterns  ???  But that still would not duplicate circle mill marks.

You did cut that thing two feet longer then it needs to be to allow for all the bow and crook to set in during the drying process didn't you? :D

If I remember correctly, some years ago a winner of a Woodmizer contest-he built a house that won first prize in the grand category-deliberately bent some teeth out to get saw marks.

I've had some people who think because the log has been milled, the timber will be kiln dried, sized and dressed all round that comes off the mill  :o :( ;D

My Oldest Boy(Jered) and Sawyer is into training horses so you can understand why boards go where they do ::) ::) ::) Know what you mean about stock I have seen cows that could find  a corner in a barrel >:( >:( But since I became Boss(don't tell wifie type person) We DON'T keep trouble makers and with 19 year old twins and 17 year old Little bro we don't have a problem finding them a new home (freezer) and it seems to be short stay :D :D. But that is what mill is for so we can build projects like this out of what mill don't want. Even with 3/8 teeth I got 60bf overrun out of 12ftX16" log

capn,
i know what you mean about housing carnivors. i have a couple of them under my roof too.
of all the negative talk about those 3/8 or 1/4 kerf blades, i cant gripe and i dont want folks to think i am. i have used a lot of lumber from circle mills before i bought one. they make good lumber. i can brag that i bought a m14 pto sawmill for a grand and used it for 2 years then sold it for $2500. that dont happen every day. pc

Capn- when you mix beef in with sawing, makes me think of slicing cows on a mill- weird images there, for sure. Gotta feed those kids somehow, and the neighbor has plenty of cows, probably wouldn't miss one if we were fast slicing it into steaks... :)
