Anybody have an idear what juniper logs are selling for these days?  I'm supposed to pick up a few from a guy tomorrow, and we haven't settled on a price yet. I don't know what to offer, and he don't know what to ask. ???

I suppose you can't just leave it at that? ;D

I can't imagine a value at all, except as compared to firewood value. What will you be sawing it into?  What size are the logs? And what quality logs would they be?

I do want to hear more about this. I find juniper quite interesting. I am not sure what scope of tree species are referred to as 'juniper'. My experience is mostly the bush-type, and I am looking for some to get big enough to make walking sticks. But you must be talking something else.  lw

DanG,

Are you referring to juniper as in ERC?
If you are, I have a cedar scale that Arky sent me and I know what he is/was paying.

Junipers come in all shapes and sizes. Eastern red cedar is actually a juniper, and there are some western species that get to 60'. The guy I build chairs for uses some sort of western juniper in his rustic furniture. He gets it from Texas, up to 12" dia. I can ask him what it goes for, but he won't be back in town 'til Monday.

Well, we don't seem to be gettin' too far, here.  The juniper I'm talkin' about is actually ERC. Around these parts, the little knotty, stinky ERC is called red cedar, but when the same tree grows in the river swamps, it gets big, with not so much color or fragrance, and we call it juniper. It is real popular for siding, and other outdoor uses, but it's getting hard to find and is a high-demand product. These logs are "supposed" to be in the 12-14 inch range, by 40+ feet long. I think he has 7 of them.  He also has some big cypress logs for me, so I need to determine a price for them, too.
I gotta go start hauling them in the morning, so if nobody can put a value on them, I'll just have to wing it. :-/

Hey DanG
I know that in Oklahoma they pay guys 50 bucks an hour to get rid of that stuff!!
We mainly have the aromatic variety of erc here in Illinois and Missouiri ..Will you pay more than .20 or .30 for it?
most construction grade stupage here goes for .18-.24 f.o.b (to our yard)
If your pickin it up that counts for something too

We call our larch, juniper. My friend makes flooring from it, we did my living room this fall, looks great, lots of grain and color. Cheers FMK

In carolina we also call juniper (white ceder).Grows in the soft swampy ground around creeks and springs. They look like power poles with a little fuzz for limbs up near the top .The limbs aren,t any bigger then my thumb. The last time I sold any I got 800.00 a truck load.Needless to say I wont sell anymore still in the virgin shape .I get a lot more for them sawing cants for barn lofts.

Well, I struck a deal on the logs and hauled part of them home this morning. They are prime stuff. They are straight as a pipe and have barely an inch of sap wood. We bucked each of the 7 trees into 2 16's and a 20'. Near as I could figger without any fancy tools, I got about 2500 bf for $500. I already have about 500 bf sold for a guy to build a sauna, which will cover the log cost. The rest is gravy and gasoline. I'm planning to make two trips tomorrow to get the rest of the juniper.
Then, there is the cypress to consider. ;D  He has saved out 2 logs that measure 30" at the butt, tapering to a mere 28", 50 feet to the east. Can anybody say "parbuckling?"  We 'bout to see what a MileMarker winch is up to!  I figure it will take 3 trips just to get these 2 logs home, but I might can make it in two. He also parked about a dozen smaller cypress logs to the side for me. I will get three 16 footers from each of them. Gotta scratch up some cash right quick, but this stuff will sell well.  ;D
By the by, I only have 8 more days until retirement. 8) 8) 8)  I figger 34 years of sitting on my butt is enough, and it's about DanG time I went to work for a living!  Wall Street has apparently heard of my impending departure, and our company's stock has taken a serious upward turn. I think I'm on a roll, here! 8) ;D 8) ;D 8) ;D

Good going 8)  Is the Cypress Pond Cypress or Heart Cypress.

Had a discussion with Tom a while back, about that Swamp grown Cedar.  According to the "Extension Service" booklet, it is called "Southern Red". It IS different than ERC. The guy that I heard it from, recently deceased, said he gets $12.00 per foot, for 1X--12" boards. The aroma is not nearly as pronounced as ERC, and the color shades are different.  Might pay to check around and see what the market is for the leftovers.

I heard about some yesterday, where the folks have some 30" Swamp Cedar.  Got someone working on it. ;)
