JD,I'll take a stab at it probibly the same except gang rip is more specific making the cuts with the grain insted of cross grain.Gang rip could be used to breakdown logs. Frank C.

A Gang Saw is another term for a Sash gang where the saws are fixed in sash just think of a lot of handsaws in a frame that moves up n down and logs and flitchs are fed through end to end  ;)

and a Gang rip is where the saws are Cicular saw system which also includes Bull edgers that can range from something that will rip lattice lathe out of things like 4 n 6 x1&1/2 into multipul small pieces rite upto something with 300hp that will take a two sided 12" deep cant n spit out a heap of 12x2s in short order

hope this helps Mate

My understanding is that a gang saw (which can be equipped with circular saws in the U.S.) is used for cants, while a gang rip is used for boards.  For example, a gang saw would be used to make a 6" tall cant into 1 x 6's or 2 x 6's, while a gang rip would be used to make a 1 x 12 into multiple 1 x 2's, 3's 4's, etc., in a single pass.

I appreciate the information. I noticed rips were cheaper and didn't know why. I am looking to cut stringers a different way. I think a gang saw will be best.

Jeff

A gang saw is a "grouping" of saws in a single machine, and a gang rip is just a more descriptive way of saying what a particular gang saw is doing. You could have a gang of saws cross cutting to length, and it would not be a gang rip saw. I also thing its a term that changes regionally.  We never called our gang saws gang rips, but they were.
I can change my profile okay. No errors. If you can,t remove all the extra info in other fields and try.

what chris described to be a gang saw was always called a frame saw round here,

and what you are referring to as a gang rip saw i know as a multi saw.

iv seen gang dockers with saws 1' apart over 20' and a bloke in a controll room tells witch saw to cut the defect out.
