A clay road in the spring thaw is like being on jello. I've walked on some of the roads on the UNB woodlot in April and you could feel the road move. :D :D

I guess our clay goes all of the way to China.  Here are a couple of pictures taken in the creek bed on my tree farm.  As you can see, there are no rocks or gravel.  Below the topsoil the clay is yellowish and then turns to blue deep down.

Our water table is quite deep, so we used dug cisterns for our water source utilizing runoff from the roof.

Portable sawing has been taking up too much of my time, but I was able to finally work Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.  I was in hopes of completing the foundation blocks, but there was just too much digging.  One more day and I will be able to finish.

Only 18 more blocks to go.

Morning MM. Great job. I am with you on the cheap labor. Thank goodness we don't listen to the folks that think we should slow down now that we are older. The best help I ever had was when I'm fresh in the morning. It takes a little longer but me and the supervisor always agrees on how we want to do it. Keep it up and enjoy yourself. I also had a load of red oak and SYP dropped into my lap last week. Will move them when I get in. The weather is getting good here so we are getting out and getting it done also.

Looks great, Magic- wish I wasn't so deep into my own project or I'd come and help- things always go faster with two people, especially if one of them knows what they're doing and can instruct/guide the other: I keep looking for someone like that to work with me, but no luck so far... :(

Looks like I'm going to have to mow the grass and clover inside of the foundation.   :-\

I'm hoping to be able to go back over for a couple of days this week.  After I finish the blocks, removing the siding from the existing building will be next so that I can tie the floor joist together on the old and new.  It's time to haul the floor joist lumber over there.  Also the air compressor, nail gun, etc., etc.

I make remarks about working alone, but that is by choice.  That way, I don't have to keep up with someone else's pace.

Foundation is looking great. That has to be the worst part of adding the addition. The framing always seems to go pretty quick for me and I am sure before you know it we will see a structure sitting on top of those blocks. Keep up the good work my friend and keep those pics coming. I have enjoyed every one of them.

After dealing with the Rip Off artist yesterday, and buying a new wheel barrow this morning, I finally did get to my foundation.

All of the blocks are now laid and the siding is removed from the lower part of the existing building.

The next trip over, I will be hauling foundation lumber and a roll of house wrap.  I can set the bands, floor joist, and subflooring before I have to measure and cut the upper siding.  Also, the LP pipe, AC line set, and entrance electrical will have to dealt with as the floor work is being done.

My brand new wheel barrow.   ;D

This is showing the 12' back porch on the left and 8' mud room on the right.

Siding removed to access the existing foundation.  The roof pitch will be 12/12 on the front.  It will only be about 6'-8' high and will stop on the left and just above the bottom of the window.  The rear roof will be much shallower allowing the upstairs window to remain.  Things will get a bit tricky with the back porch/mudroom roof.  That's the reason for the two steps down.  Those two vents will remain, but the clothes dryer vent will be moved.

Finally a full week later than I thought, it looks like I'll get a few days for working on the addition. We have rain forecast for tonight and tomorrow, but it looks like Wednesday and Thursday will be clear.

This first load of lumber is the 2X10's and 2X12's for the flooring foundation. After this it will be sub-flooring, studs and ceiling joist.

That is in my Son's back yard where I do most of my personal sawing.  Yes, he has many very good SYP's and we probably sawed a dozen after Katrina.  The previous owner removed all that would actually hit his home.

The weather looks like I will be able to start my foundation work tomorrow.   ;D

Great thread. Somehow I missed this one.

I had what I thought was a good couple of days finally working with wood.   :)

Hopefully next week I will haul subflooring, and wall raising materials.  I have a saw job scheduled for Saturday.

I have no actual building plans, but things fell together as I had visualized.

I realize that "first" mean little to anyone but myself, but this is the "first" board nailed to the existing building.

This is showing how my foundation blocks act as a ledger board.  Shown is a 2X12 floor joist mating to the 2X10 band.

Progress by the end of the day.

I'm nailing the last band on.  The JD cap adds 27% to my productivity.   :)

End of two good work days.  Looking South.

Looking East.  It is a bit difficult to see, but the outside bands are doubled for more support for the bottom stud plates.  (rat sills)
