MM. I see you used flashing over the sill plate. Is that because you did not use treated lumber for your sill plate? Up here treated lumber is a must.

You sure work efficiently, MM.  Look at that clean job sight! :)

Woodchuck53,  I can assure you that I was sore every day.  My bones get tired.

SAWMILL BUDDY,  The termite plate/shield may not be necessary, but it makes me feel better.  Because of the "chain wall foundation", it will be powder dry underneath so neither termites nor rot will be an issue.

Chris,  The Magicwoman does a good job.

Thanks to all for the kind words and encouragement.  I have a saw job tomorrow sawing SYP framing lumber but hopefully I'll be standing walls up next week.  The weather forecast looks good.   :)

Normally with this type construction nothing is done, but I will add hurricane straps on the corners.  I feel a bit more comfortable with it all tied together.  The existing Cabin is anchored down.

Nope, you did not miss anything, and you are correct that the foundation blocks are not secured to mother earth.

All that any anchoring can do is simply to prevent the building from shifting on the foundation.  Nothing will prevent a tornado from lifting the whole thing, blocks and all.

The siding will extend below the top of the foundation blocks which also helps in preventing shifting.

You know, a guy could screw a few of those trailer house anchors into the dirt below the addition and strap them somehow to the joists. Those things are TOUGH to pull out. May anchor it a bit extra in a high wind situation. If a tornado gets a hold of it though only the anchors will be left.

Don K

That is how I anchored my small shed.

Fantastic job, Lynn- I love to see nice clean work with all the wood flat and the braces lined up so straight.  How do you plan to lift your walls up?  You making them with 2X4's?  I've been using 2X6's in my exterior walls and with not-completely-dry SYP, those walls are heavy, heavy!  Just be careful lifting- you only get one back and set of fingers, far as I know.   :)

Here, we anchor to the foundation with a threaded rod into cement foundation and bolt down the sill, which in turn the studs are anchored with steel corner braces. We don't see much for tornadoes, and hurricanes don't get up this far from the coast. Nothing is going to stop a tornado from ripping up the place obviously unless your in a bunker.  :)

Are you not concerned with winds less than tornado strength winds just pushing the addition even a little? I'm no builder but I can't anchor things enough.

I guess every area has a different slant on building. I'm a poured footer guy myself with threaded J bolts or rebar extending up from the footer and tied into the frame.

Because of my lack of building skills and knowledge I tend to over build everything.

My walls will be 2X4.  I will raise the 20' walls in about 10' sections and the 16' as one unit.  Hindsight said that I should/could have easily used 2X6 but that is hindsight.

"She" informed my yesterday that she wanted a vaulted ceiling.  That upsets my apple cart a bit, but it has been upset before.  The West ceiling pitch will be determined by the actual rafters.  The East ceiling will be additional rafters matching the pitch of the West.  I'll nail 2X6's together with a plate underneath for my exposed "beams"

Another trailer load of lumber for the Cabin Addition.  This is mostly 1X6's for the subflooring and also studs, etc. for the walls.  I plan to work for the next couple of days or until I use all of this lumber.

Why not just 1 pain free day?

I did get a few days to spend on the addition.  The subflooring is completed and I only lack 12' of stud walls yet to raise.  Everything went very well, except these old bones got tired.

I enjoyed working with that old "peckerwood sawmill" sawed lumber.  Did I have some culls?  Yes.  Did I have more than I would have if I had been working with store bought graded lumber?  Probably.  But I also stickered some stuff that I would have never scaled had I been sawing for a customer.  The good thing was that I had very little actual waste.

A detail of the double band that the floor joist and stud plate nail to.

End of the first day laying subflooring.

I needed a few more 1X6's so I used the 1X6 hauler.

All of the 1X6 subflooring is nailed down.

Metalspinner will enjoy knowing that at times there are scraps on the ground.  This is my rest area.

The first 12' section of studwall is standing.

The entire East stud wall is standing.

The North stud wall is now up.  I raised that 16' wall in two 8' sections.

The first 8' of the West stud wall is now up.

That completed my work for this week and my plans are to go back next week.  I have one more 12' section of stud wall to complete  which will have a 6' rear door.

Very nice looking work. You will be through before me.  :D Yes there are some culls, but the satisfaction of knowing you sawed it yourself and saved good lumber from a tree that would have rotted if not utilized is wonderful.
