Every once and a while when I am sawing I see sparks come from the bar.  Is this normal?

I would say, yes. I was out the other day, kinda late, and saw a couple sparks. Should only be once in a while though.

it is not a lot of sparks.  Yesterday I put two tanks through the saw and saw one spark.

I seen a lot  more then that in 4 cuts with a 372 the other day. Pushing hard down and up testing a saw out in hardwoods.

You would be surprised how many sparks fly from a chain saw.Hurricane Irene hit us a month or so ago, we ran into the night working for two townships clearing roads. great fireworks show. sparks from the bars, muffler glows and every so often a hot piece of carbon out of the muffler. Tim

Sometimes I make a lot more sparks than just a few.  Once in a while I cut old trees around houses and I can put on a light display that will make the northern lights look small.  Hell it ain't nothin.
When you hit the 5 sap spouts from 20 years ago, the horse shoe great granpa put in the crotch 50 years ago or the 16 spikes the kids built a ladder up the tree to get to a tree house,  you can make lots and lots of sparks. trust me.  What I do now is tell people it is a $100.00 down before cutting just to cover chains and sometimes even a bar if the tree has been around a house for 25-200 years.  I have hit metal three times in one tree even after best guessing tap heights etc.

Well an occasional spark is not unusual .Try cutting shag bark hickory some time .

To get one throwing sparks like a 4 th of July sparkler means something is amiss .Bend driver,no oil maybe  .

i get it happen once an a while, mostly cutting dirty wood

The harder the wood and the duller the chain, the greater the chance of sparks...toss in sand or any hard foreign debris on top of that, more sparks...

If you just installed a brand new chain and you cut clean pine or cedar and see alot of sparks, good chance you had a little too much of Grandpa's special brew :'(, very dangerous either way.  :D
