Since it is really too wet to saw, I should be able to spend most of next week at the Cabin.  I'll hunt early and late, and work during the day.   :)

Those beams sure add character to the cabin addition.  Have you been able to do any more work on the porch? I sure like how you did that.

Finally to my ceiling.   :)   First, we have to take a look at my Grandparent's old house.

That rusty old roofing will become my ceiling.  The same thing that was over my Grandparent's heads will be over our heads, except that it will now be ceiling instead of roofing.

I have never seen metal shingles such as these.

I wire brushed and painted them with aluminum paint.  (I did get a larger brush).   ;D

Sitting out to dry.

The first two installed.  This is going to be a slow process, especially fitting around the beams.  I got 10 up before quitting time, but I forgot to take a picture.

What a unique idea. It's going to look great.

That will sure bring an added chapter to tell and pass on to people who see it.  Did you think about putting a couple of photos in a zip lock and putting in the ceiling and/or writing on the back of one (or more) shingle of where they came from and what they are?  People may not know what those are 50 years or 75 years down the road if/when removed..

Did your grandparents grow grapes at one time?  Are you re-roofing their house?  It looks like from the photo taken from the gate that the roof is tin.

About 20 years ago while restoring a barn I found an old framing square inside a wall.  It was fairly beat up and clearly had been used as a hammer as one area near the corner was well mushroomed.  I think that might have accounted for part of the reason for restoring because I dont think that old framing square was square anymore.  I returned the framing square in the same spot and wrote a little info & date on the studs.  I also though about hanging it on the wall but it surely would have been lost forever if I put it aside for that.  One thing is for sure, I know exactly where it is.  I am unable to say that about many other things.

Nope, that old house is no longer there.  I salvaged some lumber and all of the roofing shingles.

I then planted about 60 Longleaf Pine seedlings on the old house spot as a memorial.

"The Vineyard" was the name of the working plantation back when grapes, cotton, corn, etc. were grown.  My Great Grandparents moved there in the 1870's as sharecroppers.  They bought their first parcel in 1899 and the remainder in 1904.  Their total acreage was about 720 acres.

It's name is now "The Davis Vineyard, LP" and timber is the only crop.  I own the largest remaining trac of 346 acres.  I bought it in 2004, exactly 100 years after my Great Grandfather bought it.

There are and will be several mementos hidden in the walls of the Addition as are already hidden in the Cabin.

Tree Feller

I just found this thread and read it in it's entirety. Entertaining is putting it mildly.

I built my home mostly by myself, MM, so I can appreciate what goes into working alone. I think the biggest pain I found was not having anyone to hold the dumb end of a tape.

Anyway, thanks for documenting your cabin add-on. It's a great read and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Wow, what a great read! Tree Feller, I'm so glad you found this and brought it to the top again.

Magicman, you're an inspiration. I hope some day to shake your hand. Please add more comments and photos when you get time.

I have had family drama  :-\  that has halted my plans to work this week.  Hopefully, I'll be able to do more ceiling work next week.

Saw jobs are piling up and my time will not be my own very soon.  There are now 20 saw jobs on the book.   smiley_thumbsup smiley_thumbsdown   Yup, good and bad.

Magic, it sounds to me like you have fallen into the same trap LeroyC has, more work than you can get to. Maybe you need to do like him and sub-contract some of it out  ;D . Not to me, I'm in the same boat. Now it's too DanG cold to saw. Besides, my hydraulics don't work too well when cold, so I have a good excuse to stay by the heater...

Piney,

The problem when it gets cold is not the hydraulics on my mill, it is the hydraulics in me  :D.

I know of a remedy to that ... Jack, a few oz's will get the hydraulics flowing ;D :)

I very seldom read things that are lengthy. MM I must commend you on your post. Was a very nice project and learning for me though out the post i noticed concern a day late. (I like to say where were you when I was putting that nail in :-X) A special Lady you have. I simply like what you have done with the rough cut lumber and a few Pencils to make the plans. Ive been told mabey it,s all in your head. You have proved that with the wonderful vaulted ceiling. I as one before stated read the whole story tonight. Have a wonderful day ! Migal 8)

Thanks for your comments Migal.  It is an ongoing project that regretfully has not progressed faster.  I've got to knock out some sawing jobs now before I can make any more progress on the interior.

No real progress to report but I was questioned about how the roofing/ceiling tiles fitted together.

There is a tight fitting joint formed into each side that slide together

An end view of the locking action which prevents them from being pulled apart.

I was questioned about my progress, so I guess an update is in order.  I have completed hanging about ¾ of the ceiling, but I did not take a picture.

The barn lumber that I was planning on using for the inside wall paneling was too far gone to use, so I will have to saw some SYP.  I will use various widths and I will have it kilned and T&G.  I do not plan to V groove.  It will be used rough rather than planed and will probably get a pickle (whitewash) stain.

The various width SYP flooring is already sawed & dried.  I will plane it and I plan to stain it a light (antique) brown, make a slight chamfer, and surface nail it. It will then get a coat of something.  The wall paneling and the flooring will have some amount of blue stain, since beetle killed trees were used.

Gday Lynn

Have you got someone who can shiplap your boards and leave the bottom cutters out of their machine for a flat table ? as that will make all your board the same thickness but leave the sawn finish Mate :)
