Yes gravel does work well. I don't salt my whole yard, just the steps and 3 feet out and sometimes the area around the mail box. One bag does me 10 years. ;D But salt can certainly go straight through. But it spreads under asphalt and rots the ice. On our secondary roads its mixed with the sand. Sprayed straight salt on the 4-lane. Think about windshields when one car going one way is 70 miles an hour plus the 70 from the guy coming at you. ;) I have asphalt driveway and salt does it's thing. Plus if I want to be a real penny pincher I can just go get the sand for free at the local DOT garage. ;)
