I may go to a auction next week of a local heavy equipment operator. They are going out of buisness and selling everything absolute. They list 2 MS440s and a 018 and 026. If they look and sound OK what kind of value do they have? I really don't need another saw but I also hate to see too good of a deal get past me. I only cut fire wood and have a 044 and a 261. I guess the 440s are equivalent to my 044 but I know nothing about the 018 or 026.

You may want to check out eBay to give you a "rough" idea as to what theyre worth.

044's $400+
026's $100-200
018's $50-75

Just so you know. Brand new MS440 can be bought for $779, buy wisely.

That same saw will cost you nearly a $900 here. Might as well go ms460 for the little bit of difference.

The 440 has proven to be a pretty good saw but replaced by the 441 in the line up .Recently it reappeared though .

The 026 is a nice light weight of 49 cc,3 cuber .The 018 never won a popularity contest ,31 cc or so .

I'm not exactly certain what the intended market might have been with the 018 but you don't see many .Kind of small for a firewooder ,not a top handle climber .Perhaps just a general purpose small saw for small jobs .Depends on what you intend on doing with the saws I suppose .

Don't get caught up in the auction though because it can happen and you'll kick yourself in the pants if you get a dud . I've seen them go bonkers over chainsaws that wouldn't even start .Be smart about it now .

From the way it sounds I would go to about $225. on a 440 and $75. on the 026 if they look reasonable, like I said I don't need another saw but just in case no one else is bidding serious. Maybe I'll stay home and run the saws I have. ;D

Don't worry, unless the auction is real slow, I predict the saw prices will go out of the reasonable range real quick.

I've been looking for an 026 myself .Not because I really need it more but because I don't have a 3 cubic inch to make much of a souped up cookie cutter out of .More hobby than practicality .

Perhaps not the best choice but I know more about Stihl and McCulloch than any other brands so I'd feel more confident in reworking a Stihl .

I have always enjoyed auctions especially farm auctions and am amazed at the price swings, somethings go way cheap and somethings go way high. Yesterday I went to a local farm auction and bought a egg sandwich when I got there and a hot dog before I left, my only purchases, they sold a really old looking Stihl saw with about a 24" bar for $56. I didn't bid because it looked way heavier than I would care to handle. Does the 026 have anti-vibe handles?

026,yes !About all more modern Stihls have a full anti vibration  system . 56 bucks for an old Stihl eh .Might have been a boat anchor or could have been a 700 dollar classic .

I bought a used MS460 yesterday. The man says it has less than 20 hours on it, and I believe him, too. This thing is very clean and hardly any scratches or scrapes. Has a 25" bar on it and I paid him the $500 asking price. I found this one on the local CraigsList.

I didn't make it to the auction, my wife took a fall early in the morning and we spent the day at the hospital :(. She has a fractured elbow and will need surgery on monday to put in a plate and some screws to hold things in place. I didn't think she would go so far to keep me from going to an auction ;D.
