Do you charge for making stickers?

I know that wood should be stickered with dry stickers, but when you or the customer don't have any, you have to use something.  

So when you cut stickers at a customer site and they don't have stickers and you have to cut them, do you charge?   If yes, do you do it by the piece or board foot rate?

If I'm cutting on a board foot rate then I charge 0.20 each for 1x2x49. Although I usually charge a straight day rate so there is no extra charge.

Generally I don't charge for stickers.

 We don't charge either. Yer edging the boards anyway. We just save a few cull boards and clamp 'em up and turn out stickers. Good PR :D :D

What are the differences in using green or dry stickers?  I am mostly milling framing material from Fir, so I am not worried about staining.  What are ideal sizes for stickers?  -Mark

If we need stickers while sawing, I usually try and just keep things simple and cut them 1" X 1" I have seen where some folks prefer 3/4" X 1" guess it just depends on what part of country you are standing in:)

As I am cutting by the BF that the logs scale, there is no charge for stickers.  I usually cut defects out of a face with the swing blade and use them as such.

For per bd ft jobs,I don't charge extra for stickers that are produced while edging, though I do add them into the bd ft total.  If I have to make stickers out of a short log or on purpose I charge double the bd ft price agreed to.  But like others most time I work by the hour or day so stickers get cut when needed.

I have let guys take the edgings at the end of the edger--better than me picking them up and burning them.  The one time I sold stickers I cut up a few old red oak logs into 7/8 X 1 1/4, air dried for 3 weeks, cut to 50" defecting crook and serious knots and planned on one side to 3/4".  Sold them for $.40 each.  It was a lot of work and took several hours.

I think that its a matter of educating your client who has a tendancy to want thing for free "aw go on you'll throgh them in won't yer'.... "no" say I, "II throws in nothing", "If I'm cuttin em, its costen yer"." 50 cents a sticker, but the good news is that you can use them over and over and if you've got not more timber to dry then they great as Tomato stakes..."

That way the client is educated not expect that everything is negotable. They are like machines, if you let them have your finger then they will take you hole arm.

That's me, but then I'm only interested in buys the babies next meal and not in the mood of client. HE's really got no choise, because if he sdoes not pay he'll have to pay to get them somewhere else. I've discovered, to my horror, that nothing is for free in the world. So why should my clients get something that I do not enjoy.
