Finally got around to milling some walnut crotches

that I had laying around. Most of them were shorts 4-6' long. Some of them I let sit around too long some came out with some spalting in the sap wood. I really like this one. The pics do not do it justice. I was able to get (5) 4/4 slabs and (2) 8/4 slabs out of this crotch. Should make something really nice.

Before I figured out about crotches, I would cut the log right below the crotch and leave the crotch in the woods... Idiot! Those are sweet. Walnut crotches aren't too bad, but ive had cherry and oak crotches dissentigrate while drying.

Those are some very nice crotches, CalebL. It's always nice to open something up and see what has never been seen before. And then visualizing what they will become.

That Walnut crotch figure is awesome!

I have a bonnet-top secretary planned and want that type of crotch figure on both the tombstone door panels and drawer fronts. I have a friend with a couple of Walnut trees in decline/dying that have nice U-crotches. Hopefully, I'll get to saw some for myself this fall.

I had a really nice woodworker stop by today from arizona. He has family that lives near me and he wanted all the walnut crotchesi had cut and 300' of white oak. I ended up with $900. He said he felt like he got a great deal and so did I.

Sometimes ingrown bark makes them split at the crotch when drying, but those look very clean! Customsawyer and I cut some pecan crotches, and every one of them had ingrown bark and split right through the crotch. Of course, pecan is a delinquent, and walnut is very well behaved

I would be thinking $6 to $8 per BF. Looks like you made a very nice deal.

I have had the same problem with every cherry crotch that I have ever tryed to cut. Some had included bark so bad that they came apart right off the mill.

U-shaped crotches generally have better figure and dry better than the V-shaped ones. The V-shaped crotches nearly always have bark inclusions that will promote splitting when dried.
