Mary and I had business in town today. We pulled into Windy's for a quick bite as it was on the Walmart plaza. The drive though was backed up. But we went in as planned anyway. We stood in line for maybe 5 minutes and didn't progress. I couldn't see the familiar dollars menu. The lowest combo was about $6.00.

We made a quick decision to exit stage left. We went back down the street to a Mexican restaurant that had $4.99 lunch specials. Got right in and seated. We both knew what we wanted and ordered right them. Waiter came back with drinks, bowl of salsa and hot corn chips. Soon out orders came on a hot platter. Beans, rice and beef tomili.  Total bill less tip was less than $11.00 and we were in and our as quick as could be expected.

Usually Windy's is not that busy but the local McDonald's is shut down to rebuild.

My wife and I have a favorite little Mexican restaurant in a neighboring town, not what you'd call fast food but they are also very quick with service and the meal is always there before you can eat many of the chips and salsa.  It's very authentic mexican food and good service on top of it, I'll take it over Wendys of Mcdonalds any time.  :)

Our regular go-to for a noon meal is always Mexican rather than a burger joint.

After all those chips and salsa, then the beans and the burritos at lunch, I have to look for a spot to take a nap  :).

I have always liked Mexican food as we know it but got hooked when we visited Reno and southern California. Huevos rancheros with black bean and corn salsa is my favorite but difficult if not impossible to find here.

I love Tex-Mex food; real Mexican food, I am not so fond of. I don't have a lot of choices locally anyway for fast food. About once every month or two, I go to McDonalds. Its close and convienent, and I get to craving their fries. Always order the same thing. Quarter pounder, no cheese, medium size. About 25% of the time, it shows up with cheese. Or what they call cheese. I am not sure what it really is. The quality of help? Well, lets just say I don't go in there recruiting help for the mill. We did have one that applied and came to work for us. He worked just as fast at the mill as they work there at McD's. Casey fired him.

One reason I think people like Mexican food is that they fry with good old fashion lard. None of that polly unhydrided regurgitated sunflower canola stuff.

I think people have a craving for animal fat in their DNA.

Kansas our small town got the Golden Arches 2 yrs ago and I can't fault the work ethic of the kids working there. Probably because there's not many positions outside the rural sector. Its a young team for the most part doing a menial job. One of my sons put in 6 months when they 1st opened, out of our boys he had the least enthusiasm for work. Maccas fit his roster in around football and it meant his weekend shifts could finish at 2am etc. He now has a Boiler makers apprenticship starting 5:30 am putting in 60hrs last week, and loving it. ???

Last time I went to a japanese place, I had teryaki salmon with brocolli and carrots made the same way.  I was quite impressed for being one that's not into the whole "asian" food thing..

Well it did not happen.  We went back to our Mexican restaurant and both of us ordered the grilled shrimp over rice again.  That with the hot corn chips and salsa, we did OK and as Bibby said, all for less than $15.

Clam77 Like you I'm not really into that kind of cooking but I have a Japanese uncle that makes a marinade for beef and chicken that is to die for.  He really doesn't have a recipe for it but has told me the ingredients (sorry I don't remember them all) and you kinda suit to fit your taste.  I'll get them next time I see him, he just slices the meat real thin (fillet steaks) and marinades it for a few hours, only takes a few minutes on the grill and man is it good.
