Swede, a REAL Sawmill has a moving chain that carries logs up to the carriage and also a moving chain that carries sawn boards off to the stacker. It is just 2 chains that are side X side, about 183.6 cm ;D apart, that the logs or boards rest on. They are sprocket driven.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh !! (^__^) Fla._D.

What You say  resembles  BLUE Chain. Then thats what I first thinked about to use as I have some chains in stock. Found that heavyer, more expensive and I don´t want to jump over two bars now and then. Want to saw with out a stacker (to worry about) and some controls are placed on the saw unit, so I want free way that side.

There is 8´ between  Blue Chains! :)

This is what I am building on my mill for a log loader...

The pic is out of scale, the mill wont be that high, I will only have to lift the loader frame about 16". There are two arms 7' apart and joined across the bottom. there will be two safety stakes that drop into pockets behind the log incase that jack-all fails.

cheap and simple...  ;)  ;D

Danny,

I have 3 of those hi lift jacks and find that they are not the safest equipment to use, if you jack too fast they will some times fall. I think that you would be better off to use high lift hydrualic jack, Harbor frieght as them for the price of the high lift jack.

etat

Yeah buddy, I absolutely agree with that. If you let the mechanism on one of them jacks get gummy or not working good and you've got something heavy picked up it can ABSOLUTELY fail when letting it down and that handle will come up so fast that it WILL try to knock yer fool head off!!!  Don't ask me how I know, just take my word for it!!!!!   ??? ???

Old Age and Treachery will outperform Youth and Inexperence. The thing is, getting older is starting to be painful.

woodhaven

I also agree. Those things will take your teeth out.

Yea, I know what you guys are saying, but I do replace the springs and pins in mine about twice a year, I have only had one spring back once and that was just because I had wayyyy to much weight on it.( my old hunting camp). That is why I say I am going to put two safety posts behind the log, so if it does fail, it will just fall back to the ground but the log wont come back off of the loader arms.

You probably designed this in alreay but remember the end point where your jack is lifting from will follow a radius and not travel in a straight line(up and down that is  it'll be rotating about the pivot point on the log bunk -- you'll need a joint that allows the end to slide torwards the jack which will put a force in that direction and if something binds --it'll multiply quickly)

Be careful.

Lot of stuff..

For me it looks like hard work at some time You could run Your saw mill. I think even a winch should work faster and safer.
