I cut a coupla cord of extremely sappy pine the other day, and now my bar is loaded up with baked-on brown crap.  What do y'all use to clean that off?  Or does a guy just chip it off once it reaches 1/4" thick? :D

I'd just take a straightedge knife and scrape tha crap off the bar, the paint is only there for appearance anyway. Or you could use  mineral spirits and dissolve that pine pitch on the bar. either way. Good luck with the methods I gave you.

Get yourself a big spray can of Brake Cleaner it will take 99% of that crap off with very little effort.

You might try some Easy-off oven cleaner. It works really well on table saw blades.

I use simple green to clean all of my tablesaw and mitersaw blades.  Just soak 'em for 4-6 hrs, and they look like new.  Works great.

Good Luck

Keep your chain sharp and the problem isn't too bad.  I thought we were the only ones that had pine that sappy. :D  I call it rust proofing. :D :D

SasquatchMan

Chain was super sharp but I was cutting the big blocks in halves so my buddy could split em easier.  It made a huge pile of strings, and just covered the bar with sap armour.
These logs were so sappy - when I bucked them, they were bleeding by the time I moved them to the truck... never seen that before.

Just get me my gas mask now :D  I'll be sure not to come by when you're cleaning your bars off :D :D

Musta been some white pine. I've seen the pitch ooze out of that stuff even after being sawn into lumber. And I've seen some old white pine logs left on yards that had some much pitch oozed out; it practically sealed the end grain of the logs :D :D  Get your rubber gloves, a grease rag and dip it in some gasoline, then start rub'n.  ;D

You can through a cigarette in a pale of gasoline and it just goes out. I seen an idiot garage mechanic do it. I said what you doin? and he says, awe that's nothing to worry about. hahahaha  :D  No one ever spilt gas on a hot muffler when re fuelling? I don't think it ignited, mine never has. ;)
I think when most you folks put that saw down its not the clean the pitch. It most probably a break, or time to head home. And by the time ya get to the yard of the house the saw is nice and cool.

:D  :)  ;)
