What do you think of the Stihl 075?

I am looking at getting an older 075 model, its only missing the muffler cover and the model plate from the air filter cover. the only other thing wrong with it is a bad O ring in the oiler, what d oyou think?worth the time to buy and fix? I think so. It will make an EXCELLENT milling saw for me. If nothing else I think I will better fit the name Oldsaw-addict then. It would at least look nice at the foot of the bed as a decoration :D

Oldsaw, First thing that I would do is run a compression check.If this is good then locate the muffler and other necessities and see if it has spark. Does it have points? Will the fuel tank hold gas? Ditto for the oil tank.Are the gas lines dry rotted?Is the starter rope frayed?If all of these minor items are ok, then find a muffler and lite her up! If you need any parts let me know. I have a dealer nearby that has many old used parts. Good lock, Ken

All it needs is the cover that goes over the muffler, everything else is there. i'll have to check the rubber lines and all the rest as soon as I can get there again. I'm hoping tomorrow. not sure but almost sure its gonna be tomorrow. I also need the model plate that goes on the air filter cover.

  stihl use to use a heavy material for gas lines.. but if u plan on using the saw regular.. it mite be a good idea to just replace all the gas lines to start with.jmo

I usually do replace the lines before I start running the saw no matter what. I have a procedure for inspecting each new saw I get, it includes checking the sprocket, piston, compression, carb tuning, and many other things.

The 075 was a good old saw with lots of torque. I'd take it for milling over a newer style saw. It doesn't have the rpm's of an 084/088,ms880, or whatever Stihl is calling that size now, but it sure has lugging power when you get in the wood.

The torque is why I'm buyin it, that and the design is just a little more of a BIG saw style, not something that looks just like every other saw that is made by Stihl with the only differences being in HP displacement and saw size. I'll take an older 075 over a new saw ANY day for the quality. then if I get a good bar chain and sprocket, I'll have the thing singin like that crazyhorse guy, then I'll put some kind of native american designs on the sides of it for good luck. ;D
