Just got the word the mill I have been selling to has closed as of last Friday. To bad, they have been in business a long time.

I was at an industry meeting yesterday and we have two new mills coming in; one is a small log Hewsaw - expecting 100 - 150,000 bd ft/shift (40 - 60 MMbf/year). The other is wanting 1.1 million green tons/year (I just love it when each mill owner uses a different measure, we convert to log truck loads to make it simple). We heard from a total of eight product users, from a 26 Megawatt biomass power plant to pellets, pallets, biodiesel, to <gasp> lumber. We think if we can keep around 20,000 acres of treatment/year we can meet expected demand. I've been in on the end where mills are dying out, it's much more exciting being on the front end of what we have going here in eastern AZ. The new Hewsaw should start testing ops the week after Thanksgiving - just waiting on "juice" right now....

How many mills are left that you can use? Is anyone buying white pine?

We generally don't send much to the local mills unless they happen to be paying real well for something. The deal is that I don't buy stumpage. I get paid by the mbf and the logs are brokered to where ever so the land owner makes the most money after all expenses. I hear some mills are buying pine but the price is way down.
