That looks like sycamore, flat cut. If not, alder, or a cherry of some kind.

Looks like a juniper. But let's take it from the top. Is it a gymnosperm?

Clue #1:

Grows wild in Arizona, among other places.

The wood looks VERY similar to our Macrocarpa cypress, so I'm going to guess Cupressus arizonica ? Arizona cypress? Not that I've ever see one, but it came up when I Googled cypress + Arizona, so that's my guess.

It can't be Cedrus deodara, that's not native.  So I'm going with Arizona cypress, Cupressus arizonica,

shoot...Ian beat me to it while I was writting...nutts.

So here's the nearly interesting story. In 2005, a huge fire (started by idiots) burned around 100,000 acres of the Santa Catalina Mountains, west of the Carlink Ranch. In 2006 another huge fire burned the other side of the same mountains, also started by idiots. The same year a huge 20 mile wide rotating thunderstorm formed during our monsoon, I think it was July, dumping from 8-11 inches of rain over the burn area and to the ENE, causing massive landslides throughout the same mountains.

This tree was burned, fell down the mountainside in a landslide, then washed down a canyon 10 miles and beached on a sandbar at the ranch. The log was burned and battered, with numerous impact fractures almost completely through it. Got a couple of nice pieces, one long, clear flute blank, and a bunch of barely stuck together chunks. Pretty neat. :) :) :) :)

But apparently too easy. I will try harder......... ::)

No, not easy!! fun.  BAD, BAD fire, I remember it well.  My Brother and Sister in law called us several times about it.  Arson was bad that year.  Didn't know you lived that close to Tucson.  Alligator Juniper is sacred wood, that will make nice flutes or drumming sticks, very beautiful.

I knew it looked a lot like Juniperus virginiana, but I though for sure you were trying to fool us again :D

The heartwood is tan instead of red, and usually the trees grow very slowly. Lots of them live to be over 1000 yrs old. ;D ;D ;D 8)
