What kind of GPS do you have/recommend 2013 ?

Are there no smartphone apps that do what you need?  Buying a piece of hardware that does what a $40 smartphone can do via an app seems a bit outdated.

I didn't read all the posts (sorry if I'm rehashing) but what will you use the GPS for?

I've been using a Garmin ETrex legend and it does the job for little money.

Here's a link to a site with info on using an iPhone as a GPS mapping device for backpacking: adventurealan.com/iphone4gps.htm  It's not specifically forestry focused, but it does have some good info.  Scroll down to the "how to choose your apps" section for a link to an annotated list of the 80 apps they've reviewed.
