What's the story with the Stihl 440 (production/availability)?

I work in wildland fire and we use primarily 440s and 460s, but I'd like to clarify the status of the 440. I have heard that it is out of production, yet have recently seen being sold at ACE hardware stores in rural towns. I've also been told that Stihl has temporarily ceased making 440s due to some carbon credit trading scheme and will resume production in a few years... What. I figure this community combined with the power of the internet can explain what's really going on here, preferably with a link.

By the way, I'm new here. Thanks for having me!

I'm not sure whether its in production or not right now, but was last year. They made some after ending production favor of the 441, but were able to produce limited runs (at premium prices). They may still be making them or just leftover stock from that last run, not sure. Welcome aboard.

Stihl didn't stop making the 440 when it ceased being sold in the US, it was still available in other countries. It appears now that production has ceased, I looked at several different Stihl websites, its not showing up at all now.

If you want one, I would get it now.

The 044/440 series had a good run for going on 25 years now.
Maybe a MS440 Farm Boss should be put in the works ;)

As far as I can see it's in the realm of politics .They stopped the 038 Mag but made the 380 and 381 but didn't sell them in north America .From what I hear the 044 came back for a short while on the west coast market but priced higher then the 441 .

Husqvarna stopped I believe the 372 but also it came back for a time too .It's EPA bull puckey, popular saws models but NLA .

Good heavens when the last of the Stihl 200T's came about  scalpers on flea tried to get 8-900 bucks out of them and people jumped on it .

I can't help but wonder in my pea size mind what would happen if Ford came out with the model A or Harley with the knuckle head EL again .Probabley 40 thousand dollar tin lizzey and 20 grand worth of oil leaker .

They were the same around here. I think I saw one with the Arctic spec at $869.
