Folks,

At the request of some friends I have started a blog of my hewn log & timberframe house construction.....I will add more pics in the next week. As with any blog I guess you have to start at the bottom and work your way to the present!

red pine!!! look out for mold! and twist.

krusty

 :o

Twist? I have the first floor shell done and it has been sitting since the fall of 2001 outside with no twist whatever. Even had a spare log stored horizontally and it has not ill changes. Mold....whats a little blue stain amongst friends  :D

Actually it took 3 years for the wood to age nicely and I am about to pressure wash the first section this weekend to lighten it up to match the new logs.

good to hear of some stable red pine. and hey, that hewing photo is very nice. very nice indeed.

Never heard of red pine twisting either. JeffB has it on his little 'play house' ;) Although, white pine and red spruce is used alot in log homes here. They tend to be larger trees on average. White pine has to be more susceptible to stain than most any tree species isn't it?

Red pine can and will twist. I made my log deck (mill) out of 6x6 reds. They lifted the end abutments as they dried and twisted. I will try to get pics and post tommoro. A local man that works with red pine told me to cut post 8x8 or bigger and they will not twist or warp. On the other hand I have a lot of 1" boards and 2x4s cut and stickered with very little warp/twist.

Interesting comments on the red pine. Little progress on the settlement this week though I may get a hole dug for a foundation.

Red pine is used extensiely for alot of the local pressure treated wood and I am not sure why red pine is preferential.

Here is my hewn structure to date.

Nice spot to Settle. I've been up there a couple of times and remember seeing all the nice stands of maple. Then all the sudden your in the city. ;) I can immagine the price of land is quite high around there now.
