The rationale for selling logs by the actual volume (rather then an estimate of the recovery) is that the mill should be trying to utilize the entire volume of wood. There's a good market for Douglas-Fir chips, there's even a market for the bark (mulch). A mid-size mill around here can produce those byproducts and add to their bottom line. A tiny operation like mine doesn't have the volume to do it.
