She was howling here in RI with the Nor'easter blowing through Friday night with no pity on some of the big old boys that just could not take it anymore.  Lost 5 old white oak that snapped off at the primary fork leaving the trunk standing 15 or 20 feet tall.  They all had rot at the fork where they snapped but everything above was sound. A couple of them were along the road so of course took down the power lines. Got them all cleaned up with a couple saw logs and a lot of firewood.  Probably a lot of good wood to mill in those standing trunks if they are not rotten.    A few younger trees went down as well but they were uprooted with the ground so wet.

Gotta give those linemen credit for going up there in the dark with the wind and rain to clear the lines and road.  Yep they have great equipment but it still takes some tough guys to do that.

Sounds like a hearty storm.  Similar occurred in Va mountains Thursday, high wind and outages.  I have not been up to check on our place yet.  I expect downed trees too.

I agree with your comments concerning the line techs.   I would not want to work live lines on a good day. Adding in mother nature's fury makes it even more a no go for me.  I don't have the focus!

Sam - I need to get down to my place in Madison and check to see if the house/out buildings have been damaged.  Hopefully tomorrow morning.

Some of our blow down from a storm a couple years back it only affected pockets.

We plan to go up to Va today and tomorrow to see some folks.  I will not have time to do anything much on our land but hope to at least ride around some and see what may have occurred.
Will make sure camper and cover is good at least and see what if anything I need to work on in the near future!

Skeans how good is the drainage out your way?  How thick is that duff matt?  It seems like rain doesnt really prevent any logging out there like it does here.

Oh that's funny Mike!  If it's not raining here it's fire season.  Skid roads have to be up to wet traffic, mine aren't but most of the big landowners seem to have their own rock pits.

Mike our Duff is pretty deep, as long as there's rock we work winter time logging here isn't uncommon. With just the stuff that blew down we cut 300k bf in less then two months with three guys total.

What part of SW. VA. is your place? I am near Lebanon, VA.
Give me a new saw chain and I can find you a rock in a heartbeat.

samandothers

Near Floyd, SW of Roanoke.  Sitting in the camper with hat and coat on.   Heat is on but has to over come a cold camper.

In eastern VA, white pine and cedars really took a hit. From what I can tell, we lost 7 trees- mostly white pines and cedars in the yard, but also 1/2 of a very old black walnut and a nice 70' 18" DBH loblolly. Lots of cleanup.

BargeMonkey

We haven't really lost to many trees yet to the snow, I see parts of Mass got hammered. What worries me is the frost is about gone. 32" out of that last snowstorm, 5" last night and about 14" so far, the snow has settled quite a bit but still alot. Similar story to what happened in 1996... it got warm and then it rained...

Barge was that the year the bridge over the schoharie went down before the road was closed?

BargeMonkey

Which one ? You couldnt pay me to live down there, and slowly they have let them all rebuild, Fema is starting to get smart and buying places up, more on this end of the county because of the watershed. I drive by the "NEW" Blenhiem bridge and just shake my head, biggest waste of money possible, they can't properly fix the only major escape route out of town, RT30 runs along the creek, sirens all over for a flood and good luck getting out of it. I went out with a girl who worked for Montgomery county 911, they have a big red book on the shelf no one wants to ever open if both dams here ever had a problem, NYC is spending huge money on the dam project, we are hoping to be down there another 4yrs. We lost 2 bridges and our only major road here during Irene, we filled the hole ourselves, 6-7 trucks averaging 45-47ld a day, took us 3 days and alot of stone. I've got video of the one going down, watched my 30x60 garage wash away and I didn't live near the creek. The senior guy who runs our quarry overlooks prattsville from his house, watched everything float by, when it floods here it's quick. I was still a kid but remember doing floodwork in 1996, we stayed over in jewett / shandaken for almost 1yr, sit in a 490 every weekend. My store isn't near water but we purposely elevated it 7ft above road level and have a wicked generator going in because we are SOL in this end of the county, the fire dept recently only got a generator, Wagner lent us one during Irene. I hate flood work. 👎

If this blenheim bridge goes to anything at all, it cant be the biggest waste of money.. Perpetual first place goes to NH's bridge to nowhere.  Which is more accurately a pier sitting in a river that makes a great platform for politicians to point at while campaigning to fleece us a little more.

Barge I don't remember which bridge. it was 96 that I moved to New York and remember hearing of major flooding in the schoharie creek area at around that time or just prior to it. Having lived in New York for fifteen years I came to realize real quick that area you are in is downright dangerous when it comes to flooding. I don't know your exact location but good job on elevating your new store. Big expense no doubt but I'm sure it'll pay off in the long run.

Mike being from New Hampshire originally and now being back here what is this bridge you speak of?

BargeMonkey

It's literally a bridge to no where. The alternative bridge was finished in 1932 and they quit using this bridge.

Fema has put up 5.8 million to built a replica of it, be close to 10mil I bet with the dirtwork and extras. A town of less than 400 which sits directly below the power authority dam, gas pipeline explosion that killed quite a few, not 1 viable decent business in the entire town, I just shake my head.

I'm located in Conesville technically, 3 towns which all share 1 post office in Gilboa. Floods happen quick here, Prattsville looked like a bomb went off.

I noticed several white and loblolly pines down near our place, around Floyd and along the B R Parkway I did not get a chance to do much looking on our place, but did not see any thing down.  I recon if there are some down I'll find them eventually.
