Well I beg to differ. This is another area where your skills are far superior to mine Howard.  :tongue3: Just based on the after effects alone. Mine is all done except for the scabs falling off. You on the other hand, have a fence still to repair and those logs to see get dragged home.
But as I keep trying to teach you, to no apparent avail, it's not a competition.

QuoteMan, we've been some smart folks for almost 3 weeks.
Keep in mind the Forum was off line for a while, so if something dumb happened in the woods and made a sound no one would have heard it.

Today while I was outside working I put my earbuds in and searched through Pandora for something to listen to.

Well, Taylor Swift came up in some suggestions...I listened for about an hour.

I'm not in that demographic.  I'm not a hater, her success speaks for itself.  I'm just not in her target audience.  I wish her well as I decided to tune in some John Prine , Guy Clark and later some classic rock.

So far, that's as dumb as it's been today.

Tom,

FWIW - there are no fence repairs needed. The fence stopped the one log, the Well House stopped the other with no damage to it and the fence where the log jumped it just needed a metal T post bent back straight. I don't have or plan to get any more livestock for the pasture since the 34 y/o horse died a week before Christmas.

I will concede I have done my share of some pretty impressive dumb things (and have the scars and partially healed broken bones to prove it) many which involved messing with dangerous wildlife and such but I am still shuffling around.

Might as well share my dumb accident for today.  Cutting some fairly large red oak logs into 22" lengths for firewood.  Beautiful day,saw sharp and running good, dry flat ground.  What could go wrong?  Stuck a plastic wedge in kerf to keep from pinching bar and to keep chain out of dirt.  Somehow chain hit wedge when finishing cut and threw wedge back which hit me in the mouth.  The worst thing is a couple cuts before chain caught wedge and threw it about 20'.  The reason I took a picture is that I couldn't see how bad my mouth was cut as I don't carry a mirror.

Glad you're OK Bill, that could have gone very wrong. With all the top wedges I have placed as you did I never even considered that happening and now looking at your post I am wondering why I didn't realize that. Could have hit your eye, or nose, or broke a tooth. Teeth don't hold up well to solid object striking them. I broke a front tooth in half when I got hit it the mouth with a carabiner swinging at the end of a rope during a rescue operation. Doesn't take much. Had it hit me in the cheek I don't think I would have even noticed.
It appears that your good looks are undamaged.

You would think it would throw wedge away from you being that at top of bar chain is going away but it didn't happen that way. Can't get much uglier but it sure did hurt.

I'd ignore that last reply Bill, Doc is jus trying to run up the bill. :sneaky: It will buff out just fine on it's own.

Stopped to check a cow at a cattle operation owned by two young men. She was due to be calving acting funny but nothing had progressed.  So to escape the mud outside I changed boots and coveralls in their warm room in the calving barn. We got her in and she had a twisted uterus and couldn't deliver the calf.  So off to the clinic we went to set up for a C-section. The cow soon to follow in the stock trailer. She had developed a very friendly attitude by the time she got to the office. She put several of us up the fence getting her to the chute,  where she finally got some happy cow juice.  We got the surgery done, successfully, then got the cow (the drugs were pretty well worn off and she was fast again) loaded up and headed home.  I started cleaning up  and went into the clinic to change and go home.  I was soaked with various cow residue down into my rubber boots.  I stripped off and as I took my boots off I realized my leather work boots were 15 miles away in the boy's calving barn.
I guess I was a little more focused on solving her problem than retrieving my stuff.

doc henderson

Nebraska, I will not ask what you wore to get home.  scrubs at the office?  I always have a new pair of sketchers on the shelf in my closet for when they (the old ones) get ruined at work.

Bill be glad it was not the 500i.  from what I hear tell, it could of flown out the way you would think but fly clear around the world and hit you in the back of the head! zzzz_smiley smiley_smug01

Given your recent weather conditions I don't expect that you could get away with wearing shoe covers. :wink_2:

One shop I worked in where I also did the major machine maintenance, I kept a full spare set of older clothes in my desk, including underwear. Came in handy when I would have a hydraulic blow out while in a bad spot under a machine.

I do recall coming home from one 3am rescue call 'scantily dressed' in what ever odds and ends I could find in the equipment closet, everything else I had went in a red bag. After that I kept backup clothes under the seat in my truck.

That is odd, maybe it bounced off of something or the pressure of the closing log spit it out in your direction after the saw chain tilted it towards you?

I do have a friend that got hit in the lower lip with a piece of wood while cutting up some branch wood. He ended up with a 1 1/2" long cut that required stitches in his lower lip.

inside the lip usually heals without stitches.  if it crossed the vermilion border, we suture the whiter skin (compared to the red) and make sure the line is strait.  otherwise, people will look at your crooked lip and not look you in the eyes.  might be good if you are a politician.  easier to talk out of the side of your mouth among other places. :coolsmiley: ;) :)

Not up to my usual standards of dumbness and let's be clear no injuries or cost to repair anything. Just wasted a little time and tractor fuel.

I was trying to do something smart and decided to drag a big (25" SED X 25' long) poplar log off a steep hillside to be more accessible for future use before we get more snow or rain and the trail up through the woods becomes impassable or more dangerous than usual for a steep WV hillside. I hooked a cable to the log and hooked it to the drawbar on my little JD 750 tractor. I pulled and it slid about 20' then dug into the dirt and stopped. When I tried to free it the cable slipped over the end and there was not enough ground clearance to get it back under and around it.

I have a commitment tomorrow morning and for all day Friday and the weekend with possible rain coming Friday and Saturday so I will try again tomorrow afternoon while the ground is somewhat dry. I need to take a chainsaw up and round off the corner of the log to help reduce the likelihood it will dig into the ground. I'll also Bibby off some flare at the butt end to reduce drag there too.
