Quote from: SawyerTed on October 30, 2024, 04:21:17 PMThe saw was flawless, I had a good day.  Only trashed 3 blades.
So what is a bad day?  Trashing 10 blades? :stunned: whiteflag_smiley
I've cut a bunch of barn beams too.  Only 3 is a good day!  Trust me.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

I did a resew job of barn board turned into8000 sq ft of 3/4" flooring. We destroyed 52 blades total. I charge $60 for each and pay $40. he thought it was worth it.

Wow, $3,120 in just blade charges.  That wood must have been really special to the owner.

This involves something new and wood.

I lost my piece of cold rolled steel that I use to pry logs apart on the 3pt hinge and I use to dig  rayrock out with it too. It's about 3 feet long and an inch through.
I looked for it some, but thought I laid it down when I was digging   rayrock .
Last night I was sawing some wood up. I push the trees up into a pile and just saw them up that way,
I was sawing away having a great time. Then the chain saw stopped cutting.
Kinda odd I thought, until I looked to see what I was sawing.
Yep, I found that piece of steel, with a new chain.
I had not even sharpened it yet.
These was small trees, 4 inches across and I had lad down that rod and it fall down into the trees.
Oh well, at least I found it.  :wacky:

I messed up really bad today. Spent the whole afternoon in the emergency room. Had a poplar log laying on a fairly steep bank that I had cut down a couple weeks ago. Nice day today so I decided to cut it into  two 8' and one 10' log and take up to the mill while the ground was still dry. Marked it off and decided to cut one 8' log off the butt end thinking the 8' section would probably roll down but the 18' section would stay put. I was almost dead wrong. When the saw cut through both sections rolled down knocking me down and the big section rolled on my leg pinning me to the ground. I managed to roll it off my leg with my other leg but my left foot was still pinned under it. I could set up but couldn't stand and managed to get my saw started and cut off a piece to put under the log and drive a wedge to take a little pressure off my foot but still couldn't get it out. My foot was going numb and I was getting scared. Lucky I had my phone in my pocket so I called my neighbor ( no use to call my wife as she has had a couple strokes and no longer answers the phone). Neighbor wasn't home but she answered her cell phone and called reinforcements. Her son and another fellow got enough pressure off with a maul handle for me to get my foot out although I had to leave my boot. Foot looked pretty bad and my knee was hurting from trying to jerk my foot out. Anyway X-rays found a crack in my knee but no broken bones in my foot. Thankful it wasn't worse and that I had my phone in my pocket. Guess I'll have to take it easy for a few weeks.Going to orthopedic doctor tomorrow hopefully.

Ouch!  I hope you heal quickly and completely, Bill.
I live on a "hills and hollows farm" and have only narrowly avoided similar log rolling.  It happens quickly!

Glad it's not worse.

Heck, I live on almost flat land and a log rolled enough to use my toes as a chock.  That hurt.  yikes_smiley :lipsrsealed2:   Glad your on this side of the dirt.

At 16 years old, I was up on top of a tandem log truck with a peavey straightening out the load of logs as they came. We used a tractor and FEL to load. Well one time, a 20" aspen log (And that wasn't even a big one) came off the loading forks and struck that peavey and on over I went. Landed on my feet though, but sprained my ankle good on hard frozen ground. Was doing the hippity hop for a few weeks. Never did that again.  Wow, that was over 40 years ago. :wink_2:

Yeah, and I forgot to mention that log came down behind me and missed. I think my father thought I was dead meat, until he came looking on the other side of the truck.

Boy Bill, I sure am glad that wasn't a LOT worse. I never trust a log and now you don't either. Heal fast my friend!

It was scary even reading your description of what happened and the possibility of being totally pinned or worse was very real.  Mend my friend.

Thanks for everyone's well wishes. I'm pretty sore today all over. Doc at ER put a splint on my leg and told me to leave it on but there was no way I could get in my car and drive home with it on.I had to take it off and when I got home I put on a knee brace I already had and I also already had a crutch in the closet from previous problems. Hope that will be good enough for it to heal up.I was probably pinned for 1/2 hour but it seemed like forever. I've never felt so helpless in my life and if I hadn't had my phone in my pocket I hate to think what might have happened. I was in sight of the house but nobody to help or know that I was pinned. You all be careful out there, older doesn't always mean wiser.

Doc,this paperwork they gave me at the ER says I have a closed fracture of left tibial plateau. Going to orthopedic doctor tomorrow but don't really know what to expect. I have to remain somewhat mobile as I am the sole caregiver for my wife. She gets around okay but she can't drive or even go into the store by herself. I really messed up this time but to late now and I'll just have to deal with it.I'm hoping that as long as I can keep the weight off this leg that it will heal. The splint that they put on it isn't going to work as I can't get in the car with it on. Just wandering if it might be alright to bend it as long as I keep the weight off. Your advice is greatly appreciated and valuable to me.

Glad you are not too damaged. Certainly would have been really bad for your wife.  Hopefully the doctor will give you a good prognosis.

Stories like this make me resolve to observe a safety minute every time I'm about to do something dangerous. Look at it from a worst case scenario viewpoint.

My friend with a skytrack fork lift said how about I lift you up there 12-14 feet and we tie a cable around the tree.  I immediately said no.  Not risking it.

I would guess the lesson to learn from that is to stand uphill when cutting logs to length, as gravity always wins.

see what the doc says and let them know your predicament.  It is the big bone in your lower leg.  It is the fat part under your knee.  the tibial plateau.  hard to know how stable it is without seeing the x-ray.  It is what it is.  Let the doc know that you need to be able to get around and drive.  closed fx. means it did not poke out through the skin (infection).  It needs to heal.  It needs to heal.  It can get better or can get worse.

Thanks Doc,I value your advice and plan to try and do what ever the Doctor says is best. My SIL used to work at the hospital and says he is pretty good. I can't afford to make it worse.
