In the early 80s there was a Datsun/ Nissan I believe it was the 310 model. If you used the wrong 310 key in the wrong 310 it would turn and start the car right up. The problem was that the key would not turn back off and come out!! We replaced a number of lock cylinders when I worked at the Nissan dealership.

A lot of campers use the same key to open all the storage compartments.  I have tried this numerous times with different campers and they all have the same key.  The key to open the man door is different at least.

A buddy and I both had Nissan pick em ups, the keys would not start each others trucks but we could open each others doors.

I had pulled the key out of the skidsteer at work for the weekend, yup it was still safely on the counter last night  ::)

Some years ago we had run the shuttle on the New River, leaving a car at the take out and running the boats and everyone up to the put in. After a fine day of floating we got to the take out and my wife's friend got that deer in the headlights look. "Ummm my keys are in your truck at the put in  :D". Happily I saw some guys fishing and knew one of them. He threw me his keys and I made sure to fill his truck up on our way.

Had stuff stored in a U-Haul storage unit a long time ago.

I noticed that most of the units had U-Haul locks on them, and out of curiosity I tried my key on all of the 24 in our section and my key unlocked 8 of the units.   :o

I did not open any of them, just checked the locks!

My most expensive "did something dumb" was when I broke the curl cylinders on my tractor by pushing around a log that was too big to lift.  Today, I had another log that was too big to lift so I used my little skidding axle to move the log around.  I lifted one end of the log so I could set the axle underneath.  Then I disconnected the tongs and went to move to the other end of the log to lift it to be ready to move it like a trailer.  I heard a whooshing sound that I immediately thought was the tractor.  Instead I realized that the tongs had hooked the inside of one of my golf cart tires on the skidding axle.  That is only costing me $10 to buy another tire/wheel at a golf cart dealer.  He buys old carts and custom builds them into fancy, lifted carts.  He sells the old wheels and tires.

When I worked construction we were told it could be tens of thousands of dollars PER MINUTE that you'd be charged if a fiber optic line was cut. And reconnecting the line could be many hours, as each individual strand had to be carefully fused together.
i hauled a flatbed load of fiber optic cable spools from NC back to alexandria tennesee.  $320k value on the BOLs.  way over our cargo coverage, most valuable thing i ever hauled.  good paying job too.

Well it was an accident and you got it repaired cheap.
Today I did something that can only be defined as dumb, because I did it to myself, essentially on purpose, I just didn't know I was doing it to myself.
Lemme 'splain: I needed to sharpen my chainsaw, routine as rain, right? But I opened up my box to grab the file and guide and I grabbed the first file I saw, which was a new one I had just handled up and put in a simple clip on wedge pouch I added to the kit. (Yes, it was the right size, I know what you're thinking.) Well when I set that saw up and started filing, holy cow! In a split second I realized that I had been working way to hard with the previous file, which I can't remember when I started with it. I am just not used to wearing out files, at least not this fast. Holy cow, I had that chain slicked up in no time. I think folks throw out files way too soon, but in this case I guess I should have changed it out a lot sooner. I had bought a box of a dozen from Pherd a while back, so it's not like I needed to order them or anything. Geez, what a bozo I can be.

Seems there was a thread about cleaning files using vinegar.  It removed metal and rust.

No rust on my files, they don't get a chance. ;D  but I do have a file card I run over from time to time. Works great on flat files, on chainsaw files, it is tougher, but it works with persistence.
No, I just ran the file too long. Still knowing that....I ...just....can't... throw...it ....out. I have to be able to make something useful out of it. :D :D

It's going to make a decent nail of sorts  8)

2 files per chain for me, then they are toast, or at least too much fight for what it's worth(even though it can be done with a dull file). It's always a good feeling to use a fresh file, you can literally FEEL the teeth pulling the metal off each stroke, much more resistance. I more often than not end up hitting my
Hand on a cutter or something with a dull file as I'm pushing so hard to git that gullet.

What kind (brand) of files do you use? That seems like a lot. I get good life out of those Pferd's, but I guess I was trying to pull more than I should have. ;D

Stihl files recently, Oregon sometimes. A file is like 1.50$ so when they go a bit dull I just put them in the bin, more extra time than it's worth when I could already be sharpened up and back at er. I try to keep mine clean I use fine wire brushes and what not and give it the file a smack on something solid(a nono a machinist will say  ;D)

I also run my chains until cutters start snapping off from being so filed back. So i stretch a chain more than probably your average fella. I'll even run one that has a cutter snapped off, once 2 or 3 go though, maybe I'll use it for cutting stumps up  ;D

I use a narrow neck soda bottle full of WD-40 to swish my files.  A swish for each side of cutters seems to extend the file's life.  It's surprising how many filings end up at the bottom of the bottle over time.

I had a friend that pulled out of the Hanes pantyhose factory in Rockingham, NC years ago.  He said that was the most valuable cargo he pulled.  You can get several pair in a 50 foot box.  He said he was north of $1 million with that pull.

Years ago I hauled MANY loads that were worth a million or more. Back when scrap metal was really high, we were warned to watch for high jackers, had no idea how much giant spools of copper wire were worth. :o
When I pulled refrigerated, frozen Pizza's were a high security, high dollar load also. Every day was a new adventure.

Went to build some sawhorses today using the air nailer. Joined some 1 1/2" legs together, shot a few nails, went to move it and it started coming apart. ???
Checked the gun, still had 2" nails in it. :D

Oh, they went in... by all of 1/2". ::)
I may possibly also tried shooting more nails to fix it, before checking the nail size. :-X

When we were building this house I grabbed a couple of guys to help. one was an "expert" framer and was really smoking the nails home, man he was a nail driving machine. After they had left I was walking around looking at the progress, yup, he was sinking 8's  ::).
