When I first procured this, the engine was at the end of its life and burned enough oil to keep the bugs at bay in the summer. Continued to use it but it just became fickle to run after a couple of years. The plan was to rebuild it this summer but ended up finding a 172 industrial from an old drill rig that the owner swapped out in favor of a diesel so put that in. After some tweaking of timing and the carb it idles and runs like a top! The odd backfire when still cool but hopefully another 1/8 to 1/4 turn on the main jet will solve it.

Next summer plan to do the center pins.

One issue I found out after the engine transplant is that there is some horizontal play in the clutch release  shaft inside the bellhousing and sometimes it locks and you cant depress the clutch. A quick sliding of it with your hand to put it back into place makes it work again. Slightly annoying but not going to pull the engine out just yet as it seems to be fine otherwise.

The replacement 172 was $400 and included a near mint rad with it so it is running super cool too in the heat of the summer. Far cheaper than a rebuild and have a good core if I ever need to rebuild it now.

Good for you. With the cost of machinery today I would say you can pull wood for the cost of the fuel.
