And I also saws um.  Next week I am scheduled to finish sawing ~30 Longleaf Pine logs that are in the 30" range.  Most are 18' logs and all will be sawn into dimensional framing lumber so the production will be high.

I am told that it is not the sawmill itself, but the debarker that will not handle over 26".  To avoid any log getting hung up and jamming the debarker they frown on anything over 24" and as Bindian said above, some won't even take 24".

This is all good for the portable sawyer such as myself, but apparently no one wants to work??  ::)

These whacks will be waiting for me back home after I finish next week:

That center log on the bottom is ~45".

The two pictures below is the same customer with two whacks to be sawn with pulp logs between.

The logs on the left.  (Pulp on the right will not be sawn.)

The logs on the right.  (Pulp on the left will not be sawn.)

This will actually be the first job to saw when I get back home.  Twenty six 16' logs.

These are only the saw jobs that I have actually seen and don't include a half dozen others.  Soooo, as you can easily see, da ole man is loaded up without traveling.  ::)

I wish we had that big longleaf problem here!
I'll be needing to source some nice fairly tight period looking heart pine flooring probably next year if the budget on this job holds up.

And these are really nice logs with ~1/16" to 1/8" evenly spaced growth rings.  Yes rift/QS would make very nice flooring but it will all be framing lumber.

This would be random/rift sawn with no thought toward the growth ring orientation.

Finally have the means to add something here. This is a milestone for me as this is the first thing I have milled. Lots more to come in the future.

That's right! It's the start of something great! The chainsaw milling will make me appreciate a bandsaw mill all the more when I finally get mine in a year.

Loaded up this pig - 26 SE, 30 butt end, 33' long.  Took all the SkyTrak had to lift one end at a time.  Probably an hour to move it 50' from my "log yard" on to the mill, one end at a time.  Once I got it on, I noticed the back right side sunk about 2 inches.  Had to lift that end and jack up the bed.

Opened the top to 16" and should yield a 10x16 beam FOH.  Flipped it and opened to 10" and sliced it down another 8" so it should yield a 8x10 that will be cut into two 15' posts.  That will happen on Saturday.
Didn't get a picture (maybe Tuesday) but I got one 10x16x26' beam, one 8x10x12' and one 8x10x15' posts and 30(thirty) 4x6x8' brace stock/girts that totaled 993 bd-ft, all FOH.  I gave up for the day but still had a 8x20x6' chunk to mill out some shorter brace stock.  I captured the heart in a 25' 3x16 that I cut down to three 8' boards.  If they don't split or cup too bad, maybe make some benches from them?  Cut and stacked the slab wood and made a pallet of firewood about 4'x5'x6'.  Not bad from one log.

I loaded up yesterday and left about 5:50 am for a job that turned out to be 70 miles away. I passed deer all morning including one large buck munching on the side of the road 10' from where I passed him. I saw does and fawns all day everywhere I went. Lots of rabbits on the winding back road typical in rural WV. One paved lane in the center and half a lane of gravel on either side so when you meet someone you just hang the right wheel in the gravel and keep on going.

Mostly the customer wanted 7" square posts, 5.5" square posts and some 4X8 beams for a pole barn. Not a lot of cuts but thick gritty bark and very hard wood. When done with that I sawed a 7' walnut log, a couple of cherry logs and one locust into live edge slabs. I kept having a feed problem where something was binding and kept tripping off the breaker. I finished but will try loosening the chain tomorrow to see if that helps or increases the problem. My next step if that does not work is replace the chain I guess. I am worried it may have been damaged on my cabin log project a couple months ago.

We probably should not have put that last beam on that trailer. I did not get other pictures as the customer moved the wood into several different piles as we cut it. We finished and tally and collected about 6:00 pm and I was home by 8:00 after a quick stop to fuel up and at Lowes to get a bottle of wood glue for bench making. The customer ran an excavator all day and he had a very good helper for me. Other than the feed problem, it was a very good day with about 5.7 hours on the mill 1369 bf of lumber and a happy client. Because of the heavy wood the helper parker the trailer or tractor forks close to the end of the mill and I'd lift it on the toeboards and he'd roll then slide them on and never lifted any of the big cuts.

WV Sawmiller,  Sounds like you had a blessed day and a beautiful ride on the way to work. Glad your day was a Good one.  That is one reason I travel the back roads as much as I can when going to saw places. Scenery is always better and you can take your time and just enjoy the ride instead of the hustle and bustle on any 4 lane hwy.

Sorry that I don't have any pictures to show but I sawed Friday and Saturday for a repeat customer who had the most different species I have sawed at one job site.  11 in all,  Hickory, Oak, Sassafras, Persimmon, Cedar, Basswood, Cottonwood, Black Walnut, Cherry, Ash, and Cypress. Have to go back Wednesday of next week and I think I heard him say he might even have a Mulberry log or two.
5742 bf so far. Mostly 4/4 and 5/4 some live edge and some dimensional and about as many different lengths as he had different log species.  7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14, and 16 ft. Mostly 8 to 12 ft.  He has a woodworking shop and likes to have a lot of different wood to work with. His wife is all into the wood stuff so makes it nice for him  :)

WV Sawmiller  I just now noticed the four wheeler in that last picture. I think he might have to use four wheel drive just a little bit if he is going to move that very far.

Yeah, he had a block of wood under the trailer as we loaded it so it stayed upright. The beams extended 4-5 ft past the end of the trailer. The helper and I had to stand/sit on the tongue for him to move it 25-30 ft so we could load the next cut on to the tractor forks.

I did two small travel jobs this weekend. Saturday I traveled 38 miles to a rural location outside Malcom Ne. The setup is a familiar one for me as the client is a regular repeat customer.

The customer typically has me saw 5/4" live edged walnut for his online charcuterie board business. On occasion I also saw a little cedar, mulberry, elm, or whatever bonus logs he has at the time.

A few short walnut logs.

The bonus logs today produced some of the elm boards below.

The client had a couple of new helpers to handle and clean the boards as they come off the mill.

Yep! That's right folks. :o :o You saw it right here on the FF. Purple and green hair :D :D. In the past I have never had tail gunners around the mill with purple or green hair. They are students from the theater dept. at UNL. These two were awesome workers and are two of the best helpers I've had around the sawmill in some time. Anyone willing to work as hard as these two can have whatever hair color they DanG well choose. ;)

The final product below will be hauled up to the clients storage building where it will be stacked and stickered to dry.

Sunday mornings saw job was in Lincoln Ne. just a short 16 miles from home. The client had his tree service take down a dead tree from the back yard and move the logs up front next to the driveway so I could access them with the TimberKing.

This job consisted of just 6 logs of various size, shape, and length. The job fell within my minimum 3 hour travel charge and almost filled that 3 hour time slot. I failed to take many product photos from this setup. All to often I'm focused on making sure I'm producing the most bang for the buck and forget to snap a few more pics.

The client is a home builder and had me saw 5/4" boards out of his best lumber logs. Below is one of the better lumber logs being milled into a stack of 5/4" boards.

We also cut a variety of live edged slabs at 5/4" thickness and 2 1/4" thickness along with two fireplace mantles at 4 1/4" thick by 10"+ deep with one live edge each.

Thats all for this weekend. Thanks for looking!

JohnM and I were well on our way to finishing our 4800' order for 1x6's that we started yesterday this morning when we had a diesel leak.  I first noticed the blade continued to move long after it normally would stop.  The brake was well lubricated with offroad diesel.  Then we attempted to determine if it was from the supply line from the tank to the engine, the return line to the tank or our auxiliary line run from our diesel lube tank.  After pulling off all of the sheet metal to expose the leak, we were not able to determine the source so we decided to replace all three lines.  Three stores, TSC, AutoZone, and Advance Auto Parts and we had what we needed.  The fix was successful.  After all of this, the return line to the tank had a hole worn in from vibrating on a bolt.  We secured the lines away from the bolt and hopefully we will not have to deal with this again.

We may have to saw one evening this week to complete the order.  Next weekend we have a good pile of eucalyptus and cedar to saw.  I know it is hot other places but...it was pretty DANG warm here today- no frost danger for a few days.  I regret not being in Michigan this weekend.
