Ted,

First I must publicly apologize for doubting your "Carolina Dog" post and I felt like one leg was getting longer than the other ...
My friend, this makes me laugh and I mean belly laugh!  To have one of the best "fibricators", truth elongators and tall tale giants taken in by the truth!

Ted,

That is the very reason I first questioned it. :-[ It sounded like a tale I would have told and I was quite impressed thinking "Wow, this guy is good. That sounds almost good enough to be true!". :D What is it they say - A con artist is the easiest person to con?

Ted,

First I must publicly apologize for doubting your "Carolina Dog" post and I felt like one leg was getting longer than the other but when I checked I found there is such a K-9 as described. I personally think Brandi's dog looks a little on the small side per the descriptions listed but it could be a mix. I am sure Fritz is a happy sawmill dog and Brandi is happy with him just as I am with Sampson and others with their best furry friends.
Fritz is a very solid 30 pounds.  He is not on the small side.  He is short.  Who's  per the descriptions listed?
Fritz was suppose to be healer shepherd cross, but I think he has more corgi than shepherd.  He will try to herd you, and does that to the ducks, until they get enough of him and fly off.

Brandi,

I have been telling folks the same thing for years - "I'm not too fat I'm just too short".

For my south Ga Dogbreath friend who doubts the veracity of such standards they are enclosed in the breed standards listed here:

https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/carolina-dog/

Seems the dog should weigh between 45-55 lbs which is heavier than Fritz. I am sure your Fritz is like my Sampson and you love him no matter what others may think about him.

Milled a red oak log this morning for a repeat customer. 300 BF total, all sawed to 5/4. Got 2 - 18"x12', 2 - 14"x12', and the rest 10"x12'. I was going to saw the majority of it to 18" wide but reconsidered when I gave a little more thought to the age and health of the customer's brother, who will be the final recipient of this mornings endeavor. After sawing the log I felled another tree for her and will go back and get if later for my own use. She nor her brother want it. I'll get an 9' and a 10' by 16" logs out of it. There is also another log 8'x24". I worked by myself and billed by the hour. Total bill was $180. She paid me $350 plus the logs I left there to collect later. Not a bad mornings work. I didn't take any pictures.

No sawing for me today but getting the sawmill ready for Thursday.  Some of the cam followers on my operator's seat had been dragging a bit so for the first time ever, it now has 8 new cam followers.  Actually 7 because one was getting a free ride and not touching the rail.

The seat now rolls much smoother/quieter and will put much less drag on the power feed.  This is the first time that I have ever installed even one new cam follower on the seat.  My normal is to take worn cam followers from the saw head and install them on the seat.  Some of those shown in the background were plenty wobbly.

Brandi,

I was pretty sure I said I was not too fat just too short. I don't know how that could be taken any other way. Now these other nay-sayers are out their sharpening their scythes and pitchforks and lighting their torches and getting ready to storm the castle. I am confident Sampson will protect me - unless one of them comes with a piece of bologna or one of those little Wal-Mart 50 cent pies. If so he will abandon me quicker than the blink of an eye.

And when I go to a buffet and someone suggests I check out the salad bar I tell them "I did not fight my way to the top of the food chain to eat lettuce!"

When someone says I need to get in shape I tell them "Round is a shape." When they talk about 6 pack abs I tell them I just went for the whole keg.

I sawed up some sugar maple today in trade to a friend that hauled my dump truck. We are going to use it for planks on his low bed trailer. I told him oak or hemlock logs would be best but, this is what he had.  Awfully pretty wood to be driving his machinery on.

Walnut this evening. First I have done, it appeared to  be pretty decent stuff.

It's not a big whack maybe 150 bf when sawn, out of 3 smallish logs.

Sawed a nice Sycamore up yesterday after work. Not the best pictures but we were in a hurry to beat dark. Had to get mill put away before this afternoons rain!

The log belonged to a young fella that has a tree service and is learning to be a woodworker as well. His father and I have traded some logs/wood in the past. I believe the best two slabs are going to be a bar top. Brian
Opportunity is missed by most because it shows up wearing bib overalls and looks like work.

VB-Milling

Sawed some real skinny cedar logs last night and that paulownia that was staged on the mill from Sunday.  None was really worth sawing, but its good practice and I saw for myself, so I'm only wasting my time and money  :D

Got some decent trim boards out of the cedars for more planter boxes in the spring.

Thinking I might make some all paulownia planter boxes...the neighbor who provides the endless supply of logs has expressed interest in purchasing one for his backyard.

Lynn,
Glad you cut back on your sawing.  When you over do it you do feel like your butt's draggin! :)

I drove over to saw for a repeat customer 16 miles away. Was going on Friday but bad weather is predicted so he asked me to come early.

I set the mill up in a wide spot in his gravel drive to keep from killing the grass. We set up right in front of his future workshop where they were going to store the wood so no double handling involved. The first, 23", pine log is on the arms to become 6X6 (later changed to 5.5" X 5.5") post. It is good they measured the brackets before we got too far along. he needed 23 posts and I got him 24.

The big pine logs in front, being lifted, became posts and 2X6's. Behind are red spruce logs I am sawing into boards for B&B walls.

These poplar, some pretty small, became 4/4 nailers for the metal roof. All these are sawed now except the small cedars in the middle. I had the worst problem with sawdust clogging my chute that I remember from this green poplar (They cut them yesterday.)

It was too late to tally when we finished about 11.5 hours after we started. I am confident we have over 2,000 bf. The stickers came off the first pine logs we sawed. I had good help from my customer, his dad (where the logs are located) and even my lawyer who lives on the next farm over and is a business partner with the dad.

There are 23 more red spruce logs here to saw plus the 3 little cedar log. I was speculating whether we could finish tomorrow if the weather cooperates then the customer told me he has 9 more logs in another pile. I hate it when I get my hopes up to finish then the customer starts dragging out more logs or even goes and cuts another tree or two, ::)

The mill ran good except for the sawdust constipation and one time it shut off. I had flashbacks to my bad coil then found I had just pulled the gas line out of the tank. That was an easy fix.

When i saw the customer hauling slabs and edging over to the big trailer in the 3rd picture I told him "If we'd been smart we'd have just parked the trailer where we made the slab pile below the mill. Of course I did not know he was going to load them in the trailer or I'd have suggested that.

I'll return tomorrow but I am afraid we will get called for rain before we finish this job which looks like about another day and a half of hard sawing. We were all real well pleased with today's sawing and lumber.
