Glad you got a tractor for those 12x12x20 oak beams! Looks like a beautiful spot to saw.

One of my repeat customers came today with 4 walnut logs.  2 were respectable size and 2 were quite small, but I'll saw whatever someone brings if I can physically do it.  We hit nails twice in the first log, which was the butt log of the tree.  That cost him, but he got some nice boards and then he bought a slab of elm from me.

Milled for a new customer today. Mostly very small cedars and a couple decent walnuts. I sawed at an hourly rate and it took 7 hours to only end up with roughly 600 bf. Customer was happy with the outcome and was a good tail gunner.

busy day with a lunch meeting and getting ready for a camp with scouts.  Got a referral from one of my tree guy buddies, to mill a tree.  he brought 2 ash logs.  a little limby one, and an 8 foot, 26 inch diam. one.  he wanted some thicker stuff for a table so the big one was 2.25 inches (9/4).  the smaller one 4/4 through and through leaving live edges.  shelves or stickers.  nice family.  spent time talking about drying conditions and stickering.  he may jump on the forum for info.  he is a Pilot, and has Amish heritage.

they all passed the Libby smell test.  :)  the thick stuff was about 288 bf on the good 2.25 boards.  did not scale the rest.  ran it by the hour and by the bf.  came up with a number and he added a tip.  will look forward to helping him in the future.  i think we were both happy.

Picked up a job re sawing

beams for the Mondanock mill complex in Claremont NH.
My first ever type job.
The mill was built in 1809 .
I think it's longleaf pine.
Smells like turpentine and is some pitchy inside.

Right hand stack mostly 20'6" for 8" X 7.25" posts. Locust, elm, ash & one hickory.

13" & 16' logs for posts and 4" X 7.25" beams.

Posts and beams we sawed here first week in August. Was to be a gravel floored equipment shed till wife decided it needed to be a Barn dance venue. The 20' posts will be used in the center.

Most of today's results. About 1300 bf total here and a few 6/4 for bracing and such.

Returned to a repeat customer 70 miles away today to saw some more posts and beams for him since his wife "suggested" a new use and design changes resulted. I'll go back and finish tomorrow.

On the way to the site at 6:25a.m. I nearly wiped out a large whitetail buck in the rut and had to pull the right wheel of my truck and the mill over on the shoulder to miss him. In fact, I checked the mill arms for blood and hair when I stopped to make sure he had not run into it. It doesn't get much closer than that!

No more pictures (so maybe it did not happen - I guess I could take a picture of my check ::)) as it was nearly dark when we finished and my battery died in my computer before I could plug in the numbers in my spreadsheet to calculate the BF and billing and I had to do a stubby pencil drill and calculate by hand. We sawed about 3580 bf during 2 days of sawing. Mostly posts and beams and everything else was just the side lumber cut into 2X4s for bracing and 6/4X8" for collar ties (A term I had never heard of before this job).

A very good customer and a good helper. I had a real good time working with both of them again.

So I figured it was time to test my knee with the sawmill.  But I was using my head and got my son to come along as backup.

I sawed a total of 4 hours out of the eight we worked today. During that time I trained my son on mill operation and a bit about sawing lumber.

My customer is a repeat customer and he wanted clapboard siding.  Everything is 5/8 x 8" 8', 12' and 16'

Elam, my son, did very well the other 4 hours.

The knee is good, a little swollen but doing ok.

This is my son at the controls

You can see the addition to the house that will be sided with what we cut.

This trailer load will be sorted and restacked In the morning.

Glad you are back at it!  Don't overdo it!  What did your son think about sawing?  Is he off the trail for a bit?

If they don't use all the beams .
I'm hoping to buy the rest.
This is beautiful lumber.
I don't know what the pitch will do to planer knives.
The center of the beams are very pitchy .

Nice work SawyerTed, nice looking pile of siding.
Elam is holding a sprayer in the photos.
Is that diesel fuel to deal with pitch build up on the blade?

Elam has completed all but 80 miles of the AT.  He is home until next Sunday when he plans to finish those miles.

He enjoyed sawing for a time. He's a Professional Civil Engineer.  I don't think sawing is his passion.  But he does seem to enjoy helping his old man on occasion

The little sprayer is for diesel to cut build up on the blade.  It hangs on the control box where the lid joins it.

One of my life goals that sadly I don't think I'll ever be able to do.  Good for him.  I greatly admire people who take the time to stop and smell the roses.

I walked part of the AT.  I have a map of the entire trail and I have seen both ends, but somehow it just isn't the same.

Congrats to Elam on his upcoming success!!  thumbs-up

I haven't been sawing much.  Been building my son a carport.

I did get to do some sawing for my daughter.

These 2x4s are all I have sawn in a month with the mill.

Right now I am fighting a nasal infection.

I stopped sawing when it got hot for the summer, Since it cooled off I have sawed a couple small logs

This was from a really ugly cherry, the sapwood is punky but I love the wave in the grain

I sawed this tonight, I am "planning" to roof my deck so I want some 6x6 posts and am cutting some 3x? beams

this is 16' long the longest I have sawn and so close to the mill limit I don't want to go bigger

Thanks Howard.  Happy Thanksgiving to Y'all also.  I was hoping you were not too jealous of me slacking off while you kept sawing.

I am taking the next week or so off then have a couple of small jobs I'll try to finish if the weather cooperates. All sound like 1-2 day jobs which is what I like. One is 100 miles away but the others are under 20 which is also what I prefer.
