That makes it twice as big as the Post Office in Cut n Shoot, Texas.

I drove 99.2 miles to a new job in coal country WV today to start a new job. (When you get to Welch you turn left 15 miles before getting to War WV). I tried repeatedly to talk and price myself out of this job but to no avail.

We started on this stack and sawed about 15 of them including the worst which pushed the size limits of my mill. The smallest cant was 10" and the biggest was 20". Most were 16-18 inches. All were 8' long except the last walnut. We started on big white pine and a very big hemlock buried under the pile by the cut off poplar chunk. On my last walnut log I ran out of gas less than 2' from the end of the final cut and had to add a gallon or so to finish. I knew we'd pushed it pretty hard.

After 3-4 more of the walnut on the other stack a few small oaks here for tomorrow, 3-4 smaller pines and and even a poplar log or two back there. Should finish early afternoon.

It was after sunset when we finished and I loaded up and put a log on the mill to help prevent theft and the customer covered the stacks before I got my "after" photos so here is what I could get. All stacks are 8' long and 4' to 5' wide and for about 10"-30". We did not tally yet but I'd guess we did 2000 bf or close to it.

2 walnut logs, maybe 100 bf. I showed the water trick and this looks like meatal. I'll have to check that in the morning.

 All flat stacked.

I guess I must have been the most interesting thing in town as everybody in town seemed to stop by and watch. Several helped grab a slab or stack a board or load a log or two and one logger friend stopped by and wanted a card for a future Yellow Pine sawing job. I never get yellow mile here in WV. He laughed and said he doesn't either which is why he was interested in having it sawed. Apparently his normal markets don't buy it. We will see how that works out. I just wish he were closer. I may have to look into hotels and per diem instead of the extra mileage. Probably would not cost the customer any more and would save wear and tear on my aging and decrepit body and equipment.

BTW for our "Eskimos" on the forum - it was in the 60's and a beautify day once the sun rose.
Interesting job. You work hard for a retired guy.  :D

Lynn,

Let's hope so. I'd rather know I built someone a home than a storage building somewhere. :D You may have to modify your thread and call it Habitat for Humanity.

Brandi,

Yeah, I still remember when the PO was an office in the local country store and the postmaster ran the store till he had a PO customer then he go wait on them. He'd cut a slice of cheese or souse then go sell some stamps and back and forth all day. The same PO is now a big brick building with several full time employees and maybe a couple of contract carriers delivering the mail.

No. I saw it in McDavid Fla and Ms Edith Parker owned the store and was the post mistress.

I have seen it other places in small communities. I think the PO at Webster Springs WV is similar to that as an add -on to the store there. The storekeeper may not be the postmaster but it shares a space with his store.

LeeB I bet if you ask around it probably was like that in Yellville at one time. I remember Gilbert, Greers Ferry and my little community of Pearson Ar All had the post office in with a store.

I like those tire covers.  Are they spare tire covers?  I may get two of those.  On my dual tandem gooseneck, I just lean boards upon the side to keep the afternoon sun off of the rubber.

LeeB,
When's the last time you were in Cedar Park?  Bet you wouldn't recognize it now.  You blink and could get lost.  I have no idea where Austin, Cedar Park, and Georgetown end and begin.

Milled this originally for a work bench and Changed my mind.

Last photo is black walnut in my bathtub. Old lady was not happy with that decision. I told her she can get in the photo if she wants!

I got half the order of 4x6s done.

I marveled at myself when I find another use for the clamp.  Now I know how to move 4x6s off the mill onto the grapple.

I had to stop sawing  between the 2x6s and 4x6s while Luke helped me put the tin on his carport.

Went to see my daughter who still lives in Austin just before Thanksgiving. Didn't make it as far as Cedar Park. Last time I was there was several years ago and even then after having lived there or in the area for more than 30 years I no longer really recognized the place. All the growth is one of the primary reasons we left the area. When I go back now it is no longer my home. Too much has changes and I don't feel most of it was for the better.

My daughter works for the state of Texas and lived in Manor.  She wanted to change my Grand daughter to a Christan school when the Austin school teacher told my Grand daughter she couldn't say "God" in class.  That and all the homeless, now lack of law enforcement.  Covid allowed my daughter to work at home, so last August, she moved back here and now has a lake view house on Lake Conroe.  God provides and we are blessed.

@doc henderson that standing dead elm is some of the nicest wood, almost a pure chocolate brown color in my experience. Although I did not have the same luck with is being easy to saw as you noted. It made the finest powdery dust and sawed like a piece of steel. My curvy elm will be made into our dining room table someday soon.

The pictures don't do the spalting justice. It looks a lot better in person. The water and rotten bark blends the colors together.

Saturday I finally got to the 2 "Highly Valuable Walnut" logs a friend gave me.

I also cut a red oak into some 6/4x6"x8' to make sure there was weight on the walnut.

I was pretty tired when I was done. I never saw walnut like this so I was surprised to see how white the sapwood is.
