Old Greenhorn

Ah, that last one reminded me of this one at the same festival. I posted one from my neighbor John back in reply #142. He was at Woodstock '69 for most of the event and actually had more stage time than any other artist. He spent a lot of time trying to calm the crowd and filling in for acts that were delayed or could not get there. Ironically he was one of the lowest paid perfumers because he was only contracted to do one set.

OGH,

Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Jerry Douglas, and Mark O'Conner were a fantastic combo.  Strength in Numbers.

As far as banjo players go, Bela Fleck must be from another planet.
@wdh, sorry, I only just saw this comment. Yes, he is. He has tried to do it all, Bluegrass, fusion type stuff, he even wrote a concerto for symphony. He is a great player. I became friends with him about 7 or 8 years ago through a mutual friend who was a mentor to both of us in different ways. Anyway, several years ago we put together a special event to commigrate the life and accomplishments of that common friend and Bela appeared with about 7 or 8 other banjo greats. It was a 2 hour gig and the whole thing is on you tube. But Bela played some duets with another friend of mine who I believe to be the best on the planet today. Secretly I believe Bela knows this also. It's not a competition, but it s great music! I can send you the links if you like. I could post it here but 2 hours is a lot to watch and for folks who don't know the players or understand the significance of the event, it will just be boring. If you are a 5 string banjo player it is a must watch. It took us a long time to do the post production editing and I must have watched various pieces 100 times during that process. I now watch it about once a year, alone, when I am really missing Bill, along with some bourbon, and get all teared up.
Edgar and Mark I have never met. But I have spent time with Jerry and he is a rip! He has that subtle understated delivery to his humor that just brings you to your knees at times. Funny as heck. Great guy and mad skills and also a bit of a musical genius over so many different genres. Sam is also a treasure with such a vast and rounded experience. I have an interesting story about running into him in the Raleigh Airport and then trying to keep up with him as his wife was yelling at us from behind while we were running to get to another gate. Sweet guy. But I don't travel in those circles anymore. I miss it though, sometimes terribly so.

If I had to pick a favorite song (which I would never be able to do), Fire on the Mountain would certainly be a finalist.

And now for something totally different.

My oldest brother would come home with some interesting albums sometimes, maybe they were on the sale rack? :D  Here is one I liked that is not quite mainstream.... 1970's German Techno anyone?

What ? No armored military convoys on the autobahn.? Was in some 2 miles long, arghh, cough cough.
Interesting tunes nonetheless.  Better than the disco which was hip there at the time.
Have i said how much i hated disco ?

He's cheating, its a 6 string banjo tuned the same as a guitar.
Oh well, I would have to cheat too. :D

Ahahaha, that right there is funny !
And I thought all banjos were 4 strings.

Well 4 string ain't so bad, I use to putter around on one a little bit.

I've tried a 5 string and it has me wondering what that extra short string is for, I've never have been able to get it to "fit in".

Old Greenhorn

The better banjos have 5 strings and are played with finger picks. 4 strings are mostly tenors and played with a plectrum pick. Used mostly for Irish and jazz band type music.
What Neil is playing there is called a 'banjatar' as Hilltop said. There are many variations on this like the Banjolin (banjo/mandolin) with 8 strings and the banjouke with 4 strings. This allows players of those instruments to get that 'banjo sound' while still playing the same chord structures and fretting positions. None of these should be confused with the Cello Banjo which is a totally different concept and sound. :)

Hilltop, those 5 strings are totally different than what you're used to. Two basic styles of play: Clawhammer and 3 finger. I have had instruction at both and failed miserably.  ;D

Resonator

I "hack" out chords with a flat pick, not perfect but gets the job done. Still hope to learn the three finger roll.
Recently a friend asked about amplifying the banjo, I told him you can, but use caution you're playing with fire. Typically there are two types of crowds, those who love the banjo, or those who hate the banjo. ;D

I haven't played guitar for about 10 years, but I use to practice often. Mediocre at best, but I could play out all the basic major/minor chords, and a couple bar-chords. I started learning that you only needed to know a 3-4 chords to make a unique jingle by picking out individual strings and different patterns. My greatest accomplishment was being able to play hotel California, unfortunately just strumming though, way off from picking it.
