@E-Tex that is some fantastic looking cedar!  Send some my way; I'm stalled on a few projects because I ran out! LOL

My next week just got busy.  This is a repeat customer from December that has more logs, actually 51 more logs.  You may remember the foggy sunrises.  :)

I have not gotten the cut list yet, but I think that there will be some timbers.

I'll set up in the open spot sorta in the center and let him bring the logs to the sawmill which is what we did before.  This is Red Oak with only 4 SYP logs.  I did not see anything over ~18"butt.

Got access to 33,000bf of redwood logs killed in the wildfire here in Aug 2020.  Satisfying to complete a fence with the first few logs.  Many more projects to come...

Beautiful sunset tonight.  Airstream is my office.  Two solar kilns to the right.  Tallest trees are my neighbor's Monterey Pine, killed in the fire.

I often wondered about the fire killed trees.  Glad you are making good use of them.

I've had this chunk of red pine left over from building the house over 20 years ago.  It still had a color and number tag on it telling what part of the house it was for.  I've been using it as a step stool in the basement.  Today I decided to cut it into cookies and then I'm gonna use the top one with the tag to make a clock.  These are about 14" wide.  I'm not sure what I'll do with the other 6 cookies I cut.  Maybe I'll make more clocks and sell them.  The pine has some nice blue stain.

If you glued them all together it would make a nice stepstool.   :D

Just had these dumped on my property last week.  Looks like Oak to me, but I'm not great at identifying logs.  About 8-10ft long, 18-26" diameter.    I haven't been able to use my mill yet so I have no experience, but I'm hoping to finally get started soon.

That ski trail pattern in the bark says, RED OAK.  Live oak bark looks a bit like black walnut bark to me.  I doubt you will find any live oak in NY.  We currently have more live oak to saw than we want to saw.  It has been sitting around hardening for a few months, which will only make it that much more challenging to saw.  That red oak will saw like butter compared to live oak.

Started on these today.  Customer doing his own stickering. Not my recommendation.

Not sure if I posted a picture of this before, but I cut a couple of these cookies a little while back. This is an off cut, the other two are larger but were too heavy to stand up for a picture.

A coworker of mine had a tree cut down last week and said I could have the logs. Pretty sure it is hickory, but much more red that id seen before (I havent seen many at all). The one in the picture is about 28 inches in diameter. I'm going to have them milled into 1x6s to use on the interior walls in my cabin.

That's a good sawing job Craig, looks like perfect SYP logs.  8)

I'm back in Magnolia but he ran out of logs again.  ::)

No milling for a while....more snow on the way this weekend.  Not typical for Virginia Beach.

It only takes once to learn that improper stickering and stacking will ruin many hours of work.......

Just can't get as many boards as I want to.  He wants everything a full 2" instead of store bought size. 😂😂

I wondered about the size looking at the lumber.  The ball will be in his court when he starts nailing it up.  :-X

I am scheduled to go back South depending upon his log skidding and the weather.  I will be glad to finally put this one in the books (whenever that happens).  I left the sawmill down there and will finish when I finish.  Anyway I have at least 4 days off.  ;D

Here is a 37" X 16' Red Oak log that I sawed this morning.  Those are SYP logs scattered in the background, one  has a 38" butt.  :-\

Does this butt make my sawmill look little?

Pretty proud moment getting through my first log last weekend.  Long overdue, but with a newborn everything got put on hold.  Just ordered some stuff to make milling easier(electric winch, battery for key start, etc...).   I will say the boards were a little bit wavy so I know I have to dial in everything to cut cleaner, and definitely make sure everything is torqued down properly.  Unfortunately just as I got started a blizzard is coming through which will delay my progress.  Current goal is 1-2 logs every Sunday if not more, and getting a storage shed built, but it's gonna take some time.

@Daburner87 , that last picture looks like you have band chatter in every board.  Some teeth got overset.  This usually occurs from hitting metal, or not re-setting teeth when sharpening the band.  As Soon as I saw that chatter, I would have finished that cut, and then changed bands.  It looks like your can't has smooth cuts, but as soon as that chatter started, I would have looked for possible metal that you cut through.  It could happen from a stone in the bark too. That it why I try to debark the cut line before I cut.

Also Do you have someone to sharpen bands for you?
You can resharpen bands until they get weak from fatigue (getting bent around the wheels), and develop cracks or break.  I find it's better to put on another sharp band than try to keep going with one that isn't cutting nicely.  And that band was not cutting nicely.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!
