sawed a bit today.  @Cardiodoc stopped by with a few logs.  one ERC and a few Mulberry or Hedge logs.  He is not sure.  it sawed nice so that vote is for mulberry.  @WDH

One helpful characteristic that can help separate it from lookalikes such as Mulberryor Black Locust (besides being heavier) is that Osage Orange contains a water-soluble yellow dye, so putting shavings into water will turn the water yellow.

Thanks for the comments.
Have built houses and roofed all my life and never my own.

Finally at 59 and back pain I get to enjoy all the knowledge I've learned.
Will be putting 1/2" hickory veneer from Columbia Wood Products for interior walls of course with some rustic trim and galvanized tin ceiling. 🙂

Brandi,

I like the hold down idea with the screw in the end of the log. I tried ratchet straps but kept sawing them in two. ::) :D

I'm thinking a mod to your idea would be use a screw or staple in the end of the cant and make a loop with the wire or rope and insert a stick or bar and turn it (like tightening braces on fence corners) to tighten it to pull the cant down. When done just pull or the staple of screw which I am sure you did anyway.

How long are your crib blocks? They look real good. (If that is a standard 40" X 48" pallet I'm betting 2' long.) I have had people ask about them on occasion and have never determined a standard length. I made a bunch of 6X6 2' long that I have used for personal use a time or two. (My son bought a used storage building and we used them and some 15' 2X12s to jack it up and lower it later.) I also made a few 3X6 the same length that would not square up to 6" but as you mention you need a few smaller ones in the process too.

Nice setup 👍

I sawed 1708bf today which included

300bf of pecker pole ERC before tackling the oversize Red Oak logs.  It looks like I may finish this job tomorrow.

because I only see three White Oak logs plus that nasty 38" Red Oak on top.  I turned it back once but I see that it made it's way back.  I just might throw it on the sawmill first and get it over with.  :-X

They will all be 2" X live edge.

Osage curse!!!Things didn't go to well!!! The pitch just like the ash was nasty and blade wanted to dive. Tried going slow but just was nasty. I think I will start fresh with a new carbide when I tackle it again . How long will it take for the pitch not being as bad in the log ?

I run same mill, I run slow diesel drip, have done it for 10 years. Pitch gone, clean blade. I cut tons of syp it does not get much worse.

I say Wheeew!!!   I'm glad to finish this job.  Nothing was wrong with it and a very good repeat customer, but I am glad to finish for now at least.  I will be back to saw forty 10"X10"X12' White Oak posts plus the side lumber but for now the trees are still vertical.  :)

Inside of the last Post Oak log that I sawed.  The sap wood was strikingly pretty.  Inside it was the normal gray/brown color.

The customer wanted a "stump" for his anvil.

The last load of 2"X live edge Oak Slabs.  The 12' slabs on the left are Post Oak.  Hard...Yeah !!

Framing lumber drying.

As seen from the other end of the shed.  I sawed a total of 16,675 bf of framing lumber, trailer decking, and live edge slabs.  No more sawing for me until at least after May 9th.

This is a bug hole that is packed with red sawdust.

Here is another one, there was a grub ( timber shrimp ) in this one. Is this what caused the sawdust to be red ? If so why are none of the other holes red ?

trimguy

The first picture is a tunnel like a grub makes, I picked a little sawdust out of it.

Probably because it's fresh and they are in there 😂. I've got that kinda stuff on some of the old walnut in the sap wood I've been cutting

Milled some white oak today. Got for slabs total, they are 7 feet wide, 6 ft long, and 3 inches thick. This section was the top of the big white oak log I milled before. This was the section where all of the branches started.

My only plans for anything I cut is to sell it, haha. I'm not a woodworker. Don't have the patience or skill for it. I would imagine they would make nice tables though, they grain in them is pretty gnarly. I use a chainsaw mill for all of my milling. I have an MS-880 with an 84 inch bar, coupled with a Granberg

I know that is a lot of work.  But it is exciting to see those monster slabs.

Burdman, do you do any mobile sawing or only at your place? Sorry if this has already been mentioned and I missed it.

Brandi, I always mill wherever the log is. I dont have anything large enough to move logs the size I mess with.
And yes I do some mobile sawing. Sometimes for myself, and sometimes for customers. I've had customers wanting slabs and customers wanting logs broke down into cants small enough to get on a mill.

Hadn't shared a picture of the stack of slabs I got out of that huge white oak yet, so I took a few minutes to pose for a picture....unfortunately the starter went out on my truck, so my most recent slabs are sitting on a trailer in my driveway still. And....anyone wanna count the rings on this tree? I'm curious about how old it is...but not curious enough to count the rings, haha
