If the rings are fairly uniform in size, I'll just count how many in an inch and then estimate based on radius of the log.
I think that will get you pretty close.
Change is hard....
Especially when a jar full of it falls off the top shelf and hits your head!

Local wind direction is determined by how I park my mill.

Here is an a'peeling photo from yesterday's activities. The boss hard at it.

It IS a lot of work, thanks Brandi!
Burdman, do you do any mobile sawing or only at your place? Sorry if this has already been mentioned and I missed it.
Brandi, I always mill wherever the log is. I dont have anything large enough to move logs the size I mess with.
And yes I do some mobile sawing. Sometimes for myself, and sometimes for customers. I've had customers wanting slabs and customers wanting logs broke down into cants small enough to get on a mill.
I didn't ask that question.  KenMac is the one confusing you. :D  After all your hard work, I gather it is easy to do. ;)

Nothing like having a good "boss" helping at the sawmill or anything else for that matter!   I couldn't do what I do without my "boss".

A friend and fellow firefighter brought out about 9 nice cedar logs to mill yesterday.  He wanted it all sawn into 4" thick material that he will use to make foot bridges across ditches on his property.  This is the second time he has done this.  These are some photos he took.

Sawed some white pine this weekend.

This was the biggest diameter log that I've had on the mill to date. 31" on the small end and 34" on the big end.  Gave my new winch a workout

Patrick, isn't that white pine just a joy to saw? I love white pine👍

Bruno, please don't apologize for your log yard. It looks 10x better than mine!😬😁

I am really surprised at that white pine.  Here that stuff will have 1" growth rings and 6" knots.

They did saw nice. A couple of the smaller (20") logs had a lot of pitch that gave me some trouble until I sprayed a little diesel on the blade.  No problem after I figured that out. These were the first white pine I've ever sawn.

Got Shake? :D

Sawed this log 1 week or so ago. I saw the shake and decided I could only contain it to two of the 2x4's I was cutting, so I split the pith right down the center. I hit that center pretty well, but lost track of the other stick. It may have gone right to the OWB, I don't recall. This one made it to the shop, but not into the project. It fell apart on it's own today as I was using it for a temp shim.

I have to admit, it's a might nice finish on the out side of that 'half round dowel'. Wish I could think of some gizmo or ornament to make out of it.

Well, anybody wanna guess what I was sawing today?

Yeah, I put up that small ERC log, only 8'+trim.  But I could get used to seeing this:

I got a bit over 20BF out of it,  not really much. Still, for me, it's very neat wood. I even kept the slabs and may make chips out of them for 'something or other'.  The boards are stickered in my swamp storage building out of the sun. Should dry quick.

Something different besides pine 2x8's anyway. Tomorrow I need to make a load of 2x8x20' and 14' hemlock.

Now I've got to deal with this little pile of 18' edger boards. Seriously considering just throwing these back on the mill and let the hydraulics help me.

No pictures but my body and wallet feel like it happened. I drove to my many times repeat customer and sometimes log/lumber supplier and sawed 1,036 by for tulip poplar with a little cherry thrown in mostly for framing and resawed some dry 8" poplar beams we sawed a couple years ago into 6/4 X8" boards for a rebuild project. Not breaking any speed records but the roughly 1100 bf took 5.6 engine hours and just over 5 gallons of gas. It was nice weather and good to visit with friends again.

First shipment of wood off to Kentucky...unfortunately I wasn't able to get all of my wood in one load...debating whether to just sell all of my leftover stuff for cheap here in alabama, or pay to ship another load to Kentucky. For scale, the big slabs on back are 16 ft long and 4 inches thick.

I got a call yesterday afternoon @ 1:15; "can you saw some Red Oak logs for me"?  Yup, I loaded up and took a drive where the customer was clearing up some storm downed trees.  My customer is seen on the right in the background and a friend getting firewood on the left.

I did not saw the first log at the mill nor the last one in the lineup.  Rotten.

But I did slab all of the others into 6/4 with two 26" wide X 13/4.  All were ~8'.  40 slabs in all which will be benches, shelves, & counter tops in his new home.

1600bf and I was back at home at 6:15 with a bit of jingle in my pocket.  :)
